Kinstone is located just south of Fountain City, Wisconsin on the bluffs overlooking the Mississippi River, across from Winona, Minnesota. Just 35 minutes from LaCrosse, WI; 1.5 hours from Eau Claire, WI; 2.5 hours from Minneapolis, MN; 3 hours from Madison, WI; and 5 hours from Chicago, IL. Come out and see us!

There are multiple transportation options for getting here, including planes, trains, buses and shuttles. Get to Winona, Minnesota and you are almost there!  Please note that any information on this page regarding the availability of various transportation modes provided may not be current. Please contact the airlines, trains, buses, shuttles, taxis, and hotels directly for verification of schedules, locations, and availability.

Once you arrive, follow posted signs for Visitor Parking in either the Dragon View parking area (currently gravel) or the River View parking area (currently grass). See further directions in the Parking/Arrival section below. Thank you!

NOTE: Cole Bluff Lane is a dead-end road. When you leave again you must return the way you came in!

Although GPS or another favorite maps program may be used to navigate to Kinstone, there are general directions from various starting points listed below; especially note the specific, turn-by-turn directions once you reach the nearby cities of Fountain City, WI or Winona, MN.  NOTE: Cole Bluff Lane is a dead-end road. When you leave Kinstone again you must return the way you came in!

From Eau Claire and northern Wisconsin locations (including directions from Fountain City, WI)

  • Take WI-37 S to WI-88 South
  • Turn Left onto WI-88 South
  • Continue for about 30 miles on WI-88 South (must turn Right at one point to stay on it)
  • Turn Left (south/east) on to WI-35 South / Great River Road
  • Go about 6 miles, you will pass through Fountain City, WI – about 1 mile or less past the city of Fountain City, WI look for County Road YY
  • Turn Left onto County Road YY – go about 2 miles (winding, steep hill)
  • Turn Right on to County Road M – go about 3 miles (rolling, winding country road)
  • Turn Right onto Cole Bluff Lane (the street sign has been known to go missing, so don’t miss it!)
  • Go about a quarter of a mile – see Kinstone, first place on the Right
  • Parking: Follow posted signs and park in areas marked as Visitor Parking (See further directions in the Parking/Arrival section below.)

From Lacrosse / Madison / Milwaukee / Chicago and points South and East

  • Take I90 W all the way to and through LaCrosse, WI and into Minnesota
  • Follow US-14 W/US-61 N and follow signs for Winona, MN (Winona is about 25 miles from LaCrosse)
  • Once in Winona, at the first stoplight turn Right onto Mankato Avenue / MN-43N
  • Follow MN-43N about 1.5 miles to Winona Street (stoplight) and turn Right onto the bridge to Wisconsin
  • Go to the stoplight at the “T” where MN-43 N meets WI-35/54
  • Turn Right (south/east) onto WI-35/54  (note: this will be turning AWAY from Fountain City, this is CORRECT!)
  • Go about 1/4 mile; turn Left onto County Road M (can only turn left)
  • Go about 4 miles to the top of the ridge (winding, steep hill)
  • See two farm houses at the top of the hill; one on each side of the road
  • Go about 1000 feet past the farmhouse on the left to Cole Bluff Lane (can only turn left)
  • Turn Left onto Cole Bluff Lane (the street sign has been known to go missing, so don’t miss it!)
  • Go about a quarter mile; see Kinstone, first place on the right
  • Parking: Follow posted signs and park in areas marked as Visitor Parking (See further directions in the Parking/Arrival section below.)

From Rochester, MN and points West

Via I90

  • Take I-90 E to MN-43 N;  take exit 252 from I-90 E toward Winona, MN
  • Follow MN-43N about 1.5 miles to Winona Street (stoplight) and turn Right onto the bridge to Wisconsin
  • Go to the stoplight at the “T” where MN-43N meets WI-35/54
  • Turn Right (south/east) onto WI-35/54  (note: this will be turning AWAY from Fountain City, this is CORRECT!)
  • Go about 1/4 mile; turn Left onto County Road M (can only turn left)
  • Go about 2.5 miles to the top of the ridge (winding, steep hill)
  • Take the first Left turn available, onto Cole Bluff Lane (can only turn left; the street sign has been known to go missing, so don’t miss it!)
  • Go about a quarter mile ~ see Kinstone, first place on the right
  • Parking: Follow posted signs and park in areas marked as Visitor Parking (See further directions in the Parking/Arrival section below.)

Via HWY 14

  • Follow US-14 E to Winona, MN; then stay straight to Pelzer St
  • Follow Pelzer St along the Mississippi River; it becomes Riverview Drive and then Huff St
  • Continue to 4th Street (stoplight); turn Left onto 4th Street
  • Go one block, turn Left onto Winona Street / MN-43 N (stoplight) onto the bridge to Wisconsin
  • Go to the stoplight at the “T” where MN-43N meets WI-35/54
  • Turn Right (south/east) onto WI-35/54  (note: this will be turning AWAY from Fountain City, this is CORRECT!)
  • Go about 1/4 mile; turn Left onto County Road M (can only turn left)

Driving down the Wisconsin side of the Mississippi River

  • Take I494 E toward Hastings, MN
  • Take exit 63B to merge onto US10 E / US 61 S toward Hastings
  • Turn left onto US-10 E /Point Douglas Dr S into WI
  • Turn Right onto WI-35 South / Broad Street / Great River Road
  • In the town of Nelson, WI, turn left to stay on WI-35 South
  • Go about 25 miles (about 1 mile or less past the city of Fountain City, WI) and look for County YY
  • Turn Left onto County Road YY – go about 2 miles (winding, steep hill)
  • Turn Right on to County Road M – go about 3 miles (rolling, winding country road)
  • Turn Right onto Cole Bluff Lane (the street sign has been known to go missing, so don’t miss it!)
  • Go about a quarter of a mile – see Kinstone on the Right

Driving down the Minnesota side of the River

  • Take I494 E toward Hastings about 12 miles
  • Take exit 63B to merge onto US10 E / US 61 S toward Hastings
  • Continue following US-61S through Hastings about 14 miles
  • Turn left onto MN-316 S/Red Wing Blvd
  • Continue to follow MN-316 S about 10 miles
  • Turn left onto US-61S/240th St E
  • Continue to follow US-61S 75 miles to Winona (go through Redwing, Frontenac, Lake City, Wabasha, Kellogg, …)
  • Once in Winona, turn left at Pelzer Street  (second stoplight)
  • Follow Pelzer St along the Mississippi River; it becomes Riverview Drive and then Huff St
  • Continue to 4th Street (stoplight); turn Left onto 4th Street

Remember: Traveling by air means you will likely also need to arrange for shuttle/bus to get to Winona and then likely a rental car, taxi/Lyft, or other ride to get you all the way to Kinstone! By Train

Winona, MN has an Amtrak station and it is just 8 miles from Kinstone! The train is an easy way to get to Kinstone from Chicago, Milwaukee, Minneapolis, Fargo – or from any destination that Amtrak serves. Amtrak’s Empire Builder Route serves Winona.  Remember: Traveling by train means you will likely also need to arrange for a rental car, taxi/Lyft, or other ride to get you all the way to Kinstone! Parking/Arrival

There are TWO designated Visitor Parking areas at Kinstone. Upon arrival, follow signs for parking.  Please do not park on the road. Do not turn around in neighbor driveways and do not enter any neighboring property.

Once you have arrived at Kinstone please pull into one of the two designated Visitor Parking areas and park; you will come to the  Dragonview Parking Area (currently gravel)  first but you can continue straight on Cole Bluff Lane for about 800 feet to the Riverview Parking Area (currently grass – and YES, do park on the grass!) which is closer to the Education Center building where the Kinstone Gift Shop is. In either case, once parked, do the following:

  • Review the message board near the parking area
  • Pay the Entrance Fee if you plan to pay in cash by placing cash in the Blue Payment Box attached to the message board OR go to the Kinstone Gift Shop to pay your admission
  • If you have an email ticket you paid online in advance, proceed to the Kinstone Gift Shop to present your ticket and check in
