SUMMARY:Drum Making with Wayne Manthey - June
DESCRIPTION:Making your own drum with Wayne Manthey is an experience of a lifetime! Join us! \n“The healing properties of a drum are found in the elements that make it: wood and animal hide. Making personal frame drums is a journey that is individually and spiritually meaningful… The drum symbolizes the heartbeat of life; the heartbeat of community. It is not simply an art form\, but a tool for cleansing\, centering and focusing one’s intentions for health and happiness.” ~ Wayne Manthey \n\n\nIn this educational workshop you will make your own one-sided drum. When people create their own drums they can’t help but develop deep connections to it. The drum you create becomes an extension of yourself and a gateway to greater understanding of your connection to all. \nMaking your own drum is a journey that you will remember for the rest of your life. It takes about 4 hours to make your drum. \n\n\n\nClass size is limited so each person can get enough individual attention during the workshop. All you need to do is show up with a bit of curiosity and a desire to have a drum of your own. That’s all you need\, really! \n\n\nWe start with a pre-constructed frame\, deer hides\, and a bucket of walnut stain. First\, you choose your frame\, lay out the hides\, and take a few moments of reflection to connect to this medium. After cutting out the drum circles\, Wayne will lead the group one step at a time\, through the rest of the process. All you need is to be there and do it! \n\nThere are no words that can completely describe what it feels like to make your own drum. Come experience it for yourself!\n\n\n\n\nDATE:  Saturday\, June 6\, 2026 \nTime: 12:30pm to 5:00pm (plan to arrive at least 10-15 minutes early; class goes to 4:30 with an extra 30 minutes for finishing up as/if required) \nLocation: the Kinstone Visitor Center \nCOST:  13 Inch Drum: $175  /  16 Inch Drum: $200 \nTICKET LINK:  Get your workshop ticket here. \nTicket includes instruction\, all required materials\, and general admission to Kinstone. \n\n\nThere are No Refunds unless the event is cancelled by Kinstone. \n\n\n\n\n\nAbout your instructor: Wayne Manthey \nBased in Minneapolis\, Minnesota\, USA\, Wayne Manthey is a nationally known drum maker and teacher of drum making. He has been making drums for over 33 years. His approach is spiritual\, honoring the animals who provided the hides and the trees who donated the wood. \nWayne began by making his own drums which eventually became a true calling to create drums and to teach others to do the same. He has a gallery and studio in Minneapolis where buyers and curious individuals can view his works of art. He has a variety of handmade drums at his studio\, each unique and made of animal hides such as elk or deer and accessorized by other materials including antlers and rocks. SUMMARY:Finding A Way Forward In Uncertain Times ~ A Kinstone Experience
DESCRIPTION:FYI: Due to bad weather predicted for Saturday\, Sept 12\, we have postponed this event to Sunday\, Sept 13.\nSPECIAL NOTE Regarding COVID: THIS OFFERING IS STILL ON! We will run this mostly outdoor retreat experience with a limited number of participants to allow for proper social distancing and personal space both indoors and out. The land is lush and lovely\, the stones are standing in a sea of green\, the grasses are touched with gold – just waiting for you!\nJoin us for this one-day guided retreat and gift yourself some time to contemplate the thresholds opening up to new pathways in your life. \nKinstone has been described as a “threshold place”\, a place where we find ourselves called to slow down enough to notice the many openings in our lives where we are invited to cross into a new or renewed way of being in the world. Our world is in a massive transition. What has been “normal” is fading. New ways and ideas are begging to be seen and embraced. \nToday we will spend time with the land and sacred stone places here\, mostly in silence\, contemplating the thresholds that are appearing in our lives and seeking wisdom from our higher selves about how to step into these openings to find a (new) way forward. \nWhat Thresholds are you standing on today? How do you find the courage to take the first step to enter into this new way? What is calling to you? What has been bubbling up in you amidst the global pandemic of 2020? What about other global\, national\, local or personal challenges and issues?  What are you longing for? Meaning? Peace? Wholeness? Stability? \nImmersed in the sacred spaces around Kinstone\, inspired by prompts and symbols\, with pen and paper\, colored pencils or crayons\, we will seek to express our soul’s wisdom in a way we can hear it\, see it and apply it to our lives. Don’t expect to understand all that is revealed right away\, soul talk takes time! \nDue to our current pandemic environment – we ask you to bring your own bag lunch and drinking cup. Water and tea will be provided.  Also\, you may want to bring a lawn chair\, or blanket to sit on. \nGeneral Schedule (subject to change) \n9:00 …… Gathering / Introductions \n9:30 …… Opening Ritual \n10:00 …. SUMMARY:Beginner's Eye: A Contemplative Photography Experience
DESCRIPTION:SPECIAL NOTE Regarding COVID: THIS CLASS IS STILL ON! We are planning to run this mostly outdoor course with a limited class size to allow for proper social distancing and personal space both indoors and out. The land is lush and lovely\, the stones are standing in a sea of green – just waiting for you to come see it anew with your eyes and camera lens!\nExplore how the lens of a camera can allow us to see things in ways that we may have otherwise missed.\nJoin us for this fun\, contemplative/meditation experience that utilizes photography to slow us down and enable us to see our world in novel and original ways. Beginner’s Eye allows us to uncover shape\, color\, texture and beauty that are normally hidden from view. No photographic experience necessary!! \nBeginner’s Eye is based on the Zen notion of  “beginner’s mind” – that open and spacious place when we are completely receptive\, fearless\, totally present and connected to the wonder of each moment. This practice offers a pure\, clear\, seeing where everything is fresh and new. \nCultivating Beginner’s Eye deepens our connection with our true selves and the world around us. You do not need to be a photographer in order to practice contemplative photography. Contemplative photography is not a type of photography as is\, for example\, landscape or macro photography. It is not about having the right lens or the best camera\, or following guidelines about composition and light\, but rather\, it is about the interaction of our inner being with the object in the viewfinder. Using the camera as an extension of our inner vision\, contemplative photography focuses our attention and holds our awareness\, making it a mindful act and a way to nourish within us the integral practice of abiding mindfulness. \nThe open\, sacred landscape and intentional spaces at Kinstone make it a perfect place for a day of focused attention on awareness and vision. It is not about what you see; rather how you see it. Practicing seeing with a “beginner’s eye” will help you notice things in the world as if seeing them for the first time. This experience can be profoundly life changing. \nPre-registration is required\, as space is limited. The workshop is expected to fill. \nDate: Saturday\, June 13\, 2020 \nTime: 9:00am to 6:00pm (plan to arrive at least 10 minutes early!) \nCost: \n~ $65 EARLY BIRD – must register by May 15\n~ $75 after May 15 \nAdmission fee includes instruction and lunch.  A vegetarian lunch will be provided with options suitable for vegan\, dairy free and gluten free dietary requirements or preferences. No refunds. \nREGISTER HERE:  Beginner’s Eye Tickets \nLimited attendance! Sign up early to reserve your spot. No refunds. \nAdditional details: This course will be held Rain or Shine. Dress for the weather and wear sturdy walking shoes. \nDescription: \nThe morning is a time of learning through an introduction\, meditation\, and initial practice time. The afternoon begins with time outside creating photographs. Mid-afternoon we will settle down with the images we gathered and work on writing our own Haiku poetry to complement one or more of our photos. While the instructor prepares a slideshow of selected photos and Haiku from each participant\, the participants will have free time to walk about Kinstone. We gather again to enjoy the final slideshow featuring everyone’s work and wrap up with discussion and sharing. \nGeneral Schedule \n– What is Beginner’s Eye and what does photography have to do with it\n– Slideshow of examples of Beginner’s Eye photography\n– Meditations on seeing with clarity: Letting go of fears\, judgments\, expectations\n– The world through the viewfinder: Practice how to see\n– Haiku: simple\, short form poetry; word-play inspired by images\n– Lunch break\n– Heading out with our camera to see with clear eyes and mind\n– Return: Time to contemplate our photographs and compose haikus\n– Choose 1 or more photographs and accompanying Haikus for the group slideshow\n– Walk about Kinstone while the slideshow is prepared\n– Slideshow!\n– Discussion and Closure \nNote: This is a contemplative retreat day in which you bring along a camera (even a cell phone camera is fine!) and take photos of what you see. To be clear\, this is not a photography workshop\, i.e.\, no photographic techniques will be taught. No photographic experience is necessary; however\, if you have photographic experience you may find the practice of Beginner’s Eye enhances your work and your new awareness may manifest itself in your photographs. \nWhat to bring: \n\nA willingness to be open and creative\nA digital camera; if you have an DSLR\, bring only one lens\, and yes\, point-and-shoot cameras and even cell phone cameras are perfectly acceptable (NOTE: if your camera or phone has a data transfer cable\, please bring it along as it can be helpful to get your photos transferred to a designated computer for the final slide show.)\nDress for the weather and wear sturdy walking shoes\nA blanket or pillow to sit on\, if you wish\, for your comfort; chairs will be available to all\nYour own water bottle / travel mug. Note: water\, coffee and tea will be provided; and we encourage you to bring your own water bottle/travel mug to drink from. This is a sustainable practice we promote for all events at Kinstone. If you forget yours\, don’t worry\, we’ve got you covered!\n\nAbout your instructor: Thomas Roberts \nThomas (“Tom”) Roberts has nearly 50 years of experience as a licensed clinical psychotherapist. Based in La Crosse\, Wisconsin\, Tom offers contemplative and meditation retreats and workshops at centers locally and throughout the United States. He is the author of The Mindfulness Workbook: A guide to overcoming fear and embracing compassion (New Harbinger Press\, 2009). \nFor the past 4 decades\, Tom has used a camera to hone his ability to see the beauty of our world. He has become\, in his words\, an “advanced amateur photographer” and has learned to portray the wonder of the ordinary in ways that become extraordinary through photographs. Further\, he has practiced writing haiku\, a short form of Japanese poetry based on simple\, yet often profound\, observations of the everyday world\, to go with his photos. \nHis “Beginners Eye” approach draws on his personal experience of contemplative photography as a spiritual practice  and the innate wonder of the world to help us develop our capacity of seeing and reconnecting with our true selves and our own intimate relationship to the world in which we live. \n  \nRefund Policy:  There are no refunds. If you sign up and then determine you cannot attend; you may offer your spot to another individual if you wish.
