2017 August 13  (1:00pm – 5:00pm)

World-renowned herbalist, Matthew Wood, will be leading us on an herb walk and plant id exercise right here at Kinstone! This is a wonderful follow-up to the “Herbalism with Matthew Wood” workshop offered at Kinstone earlier this year; however, it is not necessary to have prior education or experience to participate in this course.

During this event, Matthew will focus on what’s growing right here, in the bio-diverse heart of the Driftless Region. You’ll be amazed by what there is to be found growing in the woods, gardens, fields, prairie and barnyard at Kinstone. We have a spectacular and diverse setting with lush vegetation all over; many plants will be blooming at this time which will help us with identification. We will be walking the land with all of its various slopes and vegetative cover, so dress in long pants and closed toe shoes (hiking boots recommended) and dress for the weather. Be prepared to walk in rough and sometimes steep terrain. Bring rain coats, boots and umbrellas for rain and/or sun. Bring your own water bottle, sun block and your favorite insect repellent. This course will fill quickly so register early. Purchase your ticket at the bottom of this page.

NOTE: During this course, we hope to have several of Matthew Wood’s books at Kinstone for purchase.  Bring extra cash so you can take home some of these tomes of plant wisdom.

Find and Observe Plants In Field, Prairie, Barnyard, Gardens & Woodlands

This is a practical course on discovering and identifying medicinal plants common to the Upper Mississippi region. Many of the plants we will review constitute the core apothecary of Eastern Woodland Native American herbal medicine and Western herbalism. Our teacher, Matthew Wood, has used these plants over a lifetime, and has great knowledge, experience, and insight into finding them, identifying them, and understanding their medicinal properties. We will spend the entire afternoon outdoors (weather permitting). In case of inclement weather, we will hold this course inside the Kinstone classroom and experience plant identification and information presented via photographs and powerpoint slides. The course will be held rain or shine.

Tuition is $40 per person; kids 12 yrs old and under are free with a registered adult (maximum of two allowed with one paid adult).

Come early to allow time for wandering the grounds of Kinstone to see the megalithic features, labyrinth and thatched, cordwood Kinstone Chapel!
