2017 May 20-21  (9am – 5:30pm each day)

World-renowned herbalist, Matthew Wood, will be teaching this two-day workshop right here at Kinstone! He will focus on native medicinal herbs in our region and practical household herbalism.  There will be some classroom time as well as several herb walks (weather permitting!).  The woods, gardens, fields, prairie and barnyard at Kinstone offer a spectacular and diverse setting where we will find many native plants in their natural habitats. We will be walking the land, so dress for the weather and wear your hiking boots and be prepared to walk in rough and sometimes steep terrain. Bring rain coats and boots if needed! This class will fill quickly so register early! Register below by purchasing a ticket at the bottom of this page!

NOTE: During this workshop, we will have several of Matthew Wood’s books at Kinstone for purchase. Further, we may have a limited number of herbs and medicinal plants for sale (depending on availability).

Saturday, May 20, Day 1

Native Medicinal Plants of Wisconsin and Minnesota
A Woodland/Forest Herb Walk
This is a practical course on identifying, wildcrafting, experiencing environmental sensitivity, and using medicinal plants common to our Upper Mississippi region. Many of the plants we will review constitute the core apothecary of Eastern Woodland Native American herbal medicine and Western herbalism. Our teacher, Matthew, has used these plants over a lifetime, and has great knowledge, experience, and insight into their medicinal properties. We will spend about two hours outside, and the rest inside, weather permitting.

Sunday, May 21, Day 2

Practical Household Herbalism
Herb Walks in Field, Prairie, Barnyards, and Gardens
Many of our most popular herbal remedies come from various garden and barnyard “weeds”. In this class we will outline a good, practical household apothecary, discuss the use of basic herbs, and their identification and collection. We will also visit the fields and prairie for additional insights and briefly discuss prairie restoration. Our studies from day 1 and day 2 will supplement our household apothecary. Again, we will spend about two hours outside, and the rest inside, weather permitting.

Tuition

Tuition is $185 if you register early or $210 after the early bird deadline. This includes all materials as well as lunch on both days.

Registered students who attend this workshop receive a delicious lunch made with fresh, local ingredients each day of class at no additional charge. The lunch break allows time for students to wander the grounds of Kinstone to see the megalithic features, labyrinth and thatched, cordwood Kinstone Chapel!
