We average about 20 women at our circles. Sometimes less\, sometimes more. We’ve had as few as 3 and as many as 42 show up! It begins each year with an event in conjunction with International Women’s Day (March 8) and continues each month on the day of the New Moon through October! \nIn circle\, we join in a short heart meditation\, then we have a time for personal sharing – feelings\, questions\, truths\, stories\, poems\, and more. In this space we are free to celebrate our individuality as well as our collective strength\, fearlessness\, nurturing\, healing and gifts. When the circle is closed\, anyone who brings a packed meal is welcome to find a suitable spot to eat picnic style. All are welcome to stay for informal conversation and relaxation. Come as you are. The art will be exhibited outside of the Kinstone Education Center and on the Porch. A portion of the sales will be retained by Kinstone to help support additional art events here. DESCRIPTION:Artists of every painting medium and every skill level are invited to create plein air works at our Summer Plein Air Paint Day & Art Sale on Saturday\, August 1\, 2020\, from 9am-4:00pm at Kinstone. We are pleased to announce that participating artists may exhibit and sell any works produced during this event between 4pm and 6pm on Saturday and again on Sunday between 10am and 6pm on the Porch of the Kinstone Education Building. Weekends are our busiest times and we hope that extending the sale to Sunday during our regular open hours will increase exposure and sales for everyone! For this event\, Kinstone will retain 15% of all artist’s sales. Artists must remove their artwork by 6:30pm on Sunday\, August 2. \n——————————————————– \n“Summer set lip to earth’s bosom bare\,\nAnd left the flushed print in a poppy there.”\n~Francis Thompson \n——————————————————— \nThe cost to participate is $5/person (i.e. equal to and included in the price of admission to Kinstone!)  No pre-registration is required. Registration is from 7:30-8:30am onsite. Artists must sign a liability waiver upon Registration. Artists should bring along their own food\, snacks and beverages. \nIn case of rain there are several shelters artists may opt to work in including inside the Dolmen\, the yurt\, straw-clay cabin\, Dragon’s Keep pavilion\, Chapel of Creation\, the classroom\, and the Porch on the Education Center. \nKinstone will maintain its normal open hours (10am to 6pm) to the public throughout this event. Tall grasses wave you on to paths that rise and fall\, keeping the next wonder hidden until you step forward just a little further. Find your way to the amphitheater of the labyrinth\, the cool shelter of the dolmen\, and the quiet seclusion of the Circle of Mystery or many other wonders to be encountered. Curvilinear rows of arborvitae and spruce hug the land and shelter you as you immerse yourself in color\, light\, and movement. It is magical! \n\nThis is our second plein air event and we are very excited to welcome artists from near and far\, those who have been here before and those for whom this is the first time! Join us!\nAN INTRODUCTION TO THE WAY OF THE BRUSH \nThe purposeful use of brushes\, ink and paper as a method of deepening the spiritual journey has been employed throughout the centuries by numerous traditions. In the Japanese tradition\, this technique is referred to as “Shodo” or “The Way of The Brush.”  It is an insightful method that opens us up to receive great peace\, balance and harmony into our lives via patient brush strokes. \nIn this introductory Shodo workshop\, you will have the opportunity to experience the playful and profound dance of brush\, ink and paper. Together\, we will explore aspects of using The Way of the Brush as a meditative tool and create personal\, meaningful Japanese Shodo ideograms that express our unique and creative selves. We will use dynamic Zen brushes to explore and access a level of wholeness of experience not otherwise possible. Developing an attentive relationship with the brush\, ink and paper\, allows you to access your deeper wisdom in a new and refreshing manner. SUMMARY:Summer Solstice Sunrise Observance 2020
DESCRIPTION:6/21/20 4:15am update: There is heavy mist on the ridge\, but I will be in the circle to see what happens at sunrise. Any who can join\, please do – and drive carefully in this fog! \n6/20/20 4:15am update: THIS EVENT IS CANCELLED DUE TO RAIN! So sorry we cannot meet the sun today in the Circle! Happy Solstice! p.s. if the weather holds promise tomorrow\, we will meet on 6/21/20 at 5:15 instead!  \nEvery Summer Solstice\, we stand and greet the sun as it enters the Great Stone Circle at sunrise. You are invited to join us as we recognize the passing of the seasons from Spring to Summer in this auspicious and sacred stone place. \nIf it is not raining we will gather at 5:15 am in the Great Stone Circle in time to witness the rising of the sun – actual sunrise is at 5:23am but it is usually 5:30 before it visible in the stone circle. Due to COVID\, we prefer not to meet indoors\, so\, if it is raining\, we will CANCEL the event. \nGiven fair weather and a clear horizon\, we will watch the sun as it crests the ridge and is ushered through the Summer Solstice Corridor into the circle. It will set its golden glow upon anyone standing in the middle of the circle. Further\, it will cast the shadow of those persons standing there onto the stone directly in the path of the sun – the “Shadow Stone”.  Fun fact: This stone also marks the exact point of WINTER Solstice SUNSET\, i.e.  summer solstice sunrise and winter solstice sunset occur along the exact same line!  Truly magical! \nGiven cloudy weather\, we will not see the sunrise or the shadow\, but will greet the dawn of Summer ceremoniously regardless! This will be a quiet\, meditative event with a short opening rite and reading. Feel free to bring a reading or quote to share. Witness the arrival of Summer. Send Spring on its way with blessings. Although the actual sunrise is at 5:23am\, the topography of Kinstone means it will be just a little (about 8-10 minutes) later than that. Be there early\, just in case! Feel free to arrive as early as 5:00am if you wish. We will NOT meet afterwards for refreshments due to COVID. \nCOST: Suggested Donation of $5/person (place in Blue Payment Box on the Information Sign Boards near the parking areas); No Registration Required \nDate: Saturday\, June 20\, 2020  Time: 5:15am – 6:15am \nThis event is outdoors. JOIN US! \nAt Kinstone we take time to recognize the passing of the seasons with intentional events that remind us to honor our home in this part of the Universe. Join us as we greet Summer with a mystical\, magical\, musical welcome on Midsummer’s Eve amidst the great circle of standing stones at Kinstone. \nExperience the incredible\, transformational sounds of Peter Phippen and Rahbi Crawford in this magical venue. They are master musicians who improvise and collaborate with great effect. Their blending of the sounds of flutes and crystal singing bowls will get right into our hearts and souls. Special guests Victoria Shoemaker (wooden and crystal flutes) and Brian Reidinger (percussion / drums) will also perform. \nThese world class musicians will take us on a sound journey as we sit amidst the standing stones of Kinstone Circle. They will enchant us with their sacred sound even as they lull the sun to sleep at sunset. As always\, the musicians will join the breezes and the host of singing creatures living in and around the fields\, forests and waters of Kinstone. \nIMPORTANT: This is a non-smoking\, alcohol free\, kid-friendly event. \nDue to COVID\, if we are rained out on Friday evening we will NOT hold this event inside the Kinstone Education Center. All sales will be handled outdoors.  \nArtists of every painting medium and every skill level are invited to create plein air works at our Spring Plein Air Paint Day & Art Sale on Sunday\, June 14\, 2020\, from 9am-4:00pm at Kinstone. Participating artists may exhibit and sell any works produced during this event between 4pm and 6pm OUTSIDE of the Kinstone Education Building and on the Porch. Due to this being our very first plein air event and due to the limited\, 2-hour sales opportunity on this day\, Kinstone will retain NO part of any sales made by participating artists for this event only. Artists must remove their artwork by 6:30pm. \n—————————————————————————————————- \nJust one week before Solstice\, the lovely spirit of Spring will be in fine fiddle in June. She will already be saying farewell as greens intensify\, blues deepen and she strews the ground with fair flowers to prepare the way for Summer. The land is lush and lovely\, the stones are standing in a sea of green – just waiting for you to come see it anew with your eyes and camera lens!\nExplore how the lens of a camera can allow us to see things in ways that we may have otherwise missed.\nJoin us for this fun\, contemplative/meditation experience that utilizes photography to slow us down and enable us to see our world in novel and original ways. Beginner’s Eye allows us to uncover shape\, color\, texture and beauty that are normally hidden from view. No photographic experience necessary!! \nBeginner’s Eye is based on the Zen notion of  “beginner’s mind” – that open and spacious place when we are completely receptive\, fearless\, totally present and connected to the wonder of each moment. This practice offers a pure\, clear\, seeing where everything is fresh and new. \nCultivating Beginner’s Eye deepens our connection with our true selves and the world around us. You do not need to be a photographer in order to practice contemplative photography. Contemplative photography is not a type of photography as is\, for example\, landscape or macro photography. It is not about having the right lens or the best camera\, or following guidelines about composition and light\, but rather\, it is about the interaction of our inner being with the object in the viewfinder. Using the camera as an extension of our inner vision\, contemplative photography focuses our attention and holds our awareness\, making it a mindful act and a way to nourish within us the integral practice of abiding mindfulness. \nThe open\, sacred landscape and intentional spaces at Kinstone make it a perfect place for a day of focused attention on awareness and vision. It is not about what you see; rather how you see it. Practicing seeing with a “beginner’s eye” will help you notice things in the world as if seeing them for the first time. This experience can be profoundly life changing. \nPre-registration is required\, as space is limited. He has been an adjunct professor at Viterbo University in La Crosse\, WI and St. Cloud State University in St. Cloud\, MN\, where he has taught mind-body healing\, integrative medicine and other mindfulness related topics. He has been a practicing Zen Buddhist for nearly 50 years. In 1992 he received lay Buddhist vows from Thich Nhat Hanh. Based in La Crosse\, Wisconsin\, Tom offers contemplative and meditation retreats and workshops at centers locally and throughout the United States. He is the author of The Mindfulness Workbook: A guide to overcoming fear and embracing compassion (New Harbinger Press\, 2009). \nFor the past 4 decades\, Tom has used a camera to hone his ability to see the beauty of our world. He has become\, in his words\, an “advanced amateur photographer” and has learned to portray the wonder of the ordinary in ways that become extraordinary through photographs. Stay up to date with our events and classes by visiting our CALENDAR PAGE often and/or by SIGNING UP to receive our email updates.\n\n\n\n\nJoin us for this 3-hour hands-on experience and learn how to identify 25+ native trees solely by their winter characteristics like bark\, branches\, buds and scent.  \nThis course is for ANYONE but may especially appeal to herbalists\, biologists\, botanists\, life sciences students\, farmers\, homesteaders\, permaculturists\, homeowners\, park goers\, hikers\, nature lovers\, tree lovers and any who wish to get to know the trees a bit better. \nEver wonder how to tell oak from ash\, or more importantly\, ash from boxelder\, when cutting firewood in the winter? Do you know trees well enough to find the oaks where hen-of-the-woods mushrooms are found\, elms where morels might grow\, or food and medicinal trees like basswood and black cherry in early spring? \nLearning trees in the dormant season is ideal because tree bark\, branches and buds are easily visible\, and once you learn tree identification in the winter\, it will be a snap when you come back in the summer and you can use their leaves to id them as well! \nThis course includes an introduction to tree identification in the classroom followed by a group walk to find\, observe\, and identify trees in the woodlands of Kinstone. She has 25 years of experience in the fields of natural resource management\, landscaping and ecological research. She has a broad educational background with a Ph.D. in Conservation Biology\, minoring in Forestry\, and a B.S. in Horticulture and Botany. She has published papers or written reports on topics such as oak savanna\, woodland and dune restoration\, nursery management\, endangered species recovery\, insect and dune ecology\, and GIS-based decision-making tools for urban ecological restoration.  Dr. Lane has worked extensively in the Canadian Rockies\, Boreal Forest\, Midwestern United States\, Florida and Panama. Come prepared! \nSpring Equinox Morning Observance\nWatch the Sunrise Alignment Enlighten the Heart Stone \nWe will welcome the first sunrise of Spring together as we watch the Equinox sunrise alignment here at Kinstone.  \nSpring Equinox is an astronomically significant solar event. It occurs when the sun is midpoint in its journey from Winter Solstice to Summer Solstice. The sun appears to rise at due east and set at due west. It is traditionally seen as a time of balance. The light of day and the dark of night are equal. It is a harbinger of spring; a time for new beginnings\, growth\, and seeking the joy of the light. \nAt Kinstone we have a unique alignment visible only at Equinox at sunrise. Stand with us in The Three Witnesses sculpture as the sun aligns through the Equinox Window and highlights the Heart Stone. Come and see! \nCOST: admission to Kinstone ($5/person) Place your admission in the Blue Payment Box attached to the Information Sign Board near the parking areas. No Registration Required \nDate: Friday\, March 20   Time: 6:30am \nActual sunrise is expected at 7:08am for our location. However\, with the topography specific to Kinstone\, the time we witness it may be just a bit later! Come at 6:30 to enjoy the predawn colors and our brief program before the sun rises! \n\n\n This will be a quiet\, meditative event with a short opening rite and reading to welcome Spring. If the sunlight is strong enough and unobstructed by clouds on the horizon\, we will see a line of polka-dots on Atlas and a select few folks may be able to “catch the sun” as it aligns with the perforations in Lancelot. We will begin watching for opportunities to Catch the Sun immediately after our readings. We average about 20 women at our circles. Sometimes less\, sometimes more. We’ve had as few as 3 and as many as 42 show up! It begins each year with an event in conjunction with International Women’s Day (March 8) and continues each month on the day of the New Moon through October! \nIn circle\, we join in a short heart meditation\, then we have a time for personal sharing – feelings\, questions\, truths\, stories\, poems\, and more. In this space we are free to celebrate our individuality as well as our collective strength\, fearlessness\, nurturing\, healing and gifts. SUMMARY:Winter Solstice Sunrise Observance 2019
DESCRIPTION:Join us to celebrate the passing of the seasons from Autumn to Winter. Come acknowledge the Winter Solstice  by watching the sunrise with us and seeing the alignment in the Great Stone Circle at Kinstone! \nCOST: Free\, No Registration Required \nDate: Saturday\, December 21\, 2019  Time: 7:30 am – 8:00am  (Sunrise Gathering) \nIMPORTANT: Arrive 10 minutes early and meet at the Education Center! We will decide at the last minute if we go out to the circle or if we stay indoors. \nWeather and conditions permitting\, we will proceed to the center of the Great Stone Circle at Kinstone. Given fair weather and clear skies\, we will watch the sun as it crests the ridge and beams through the Chair Stones to light up anyone standing in the middle of the circle.  We will hear the story of the Chair Stones and how they are connected to the family of Kinstone. Given cloudy or rainy/snowy weather\, we will not see the sunrise\, but will greet it ceremoniously regardless! This will be a quiet\, meditative event with a short opening rite and reading. Witness the arrival of Winter. Send Autumn on its way with blessings. This observance will last only 30 minutes; however\, there will be coffee\, tea\, and hot cocoa in the Education Center afterwards. Please join us! \nThis event is planned to be held outdoors and will be held rain\, snow or shine. Please note that we will not see the alignment if it is cloudy or if the horizon is obstructed by morning mist\, fog\, rain\, snow or clouds. If it is raining or snowing\, or if the snow on the ground is too deep for walking through\, we may gather indoors in the Kinstone Education Center. \nCancellation will occur in case of a major storm. SUMMARY:Samhain - A Potluck and Poetry Bonfire
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we celebrate the ancient Celtic holiday of Samhain (pronounced “sauw-win”) with a Potluck Feast\, Poetry Readings and a Bonfire. On November 1\, in the space between years called “no-time\,” we will gather by the fire to share stories\, poems and a potluck feast. This is the last hurrah before winter sets in when we hunker down for the season of darkness and cold. \nWe invite you to revel in the enjoyment of Autumn’s bountiful harvest with us at Kinstone. The wheel of the year keeps turning; the sun has already begun to sleep in later each morning and leave us in darkness earlier each evening. We will emulate the ancients with a community fire and potluck feast. We will take time to remember our ancestors and those who have died. We will celebrate our children and those who are new-born. Everyone who wishes to may share their original poetry by reading it out loud around the fire. Costumes are encouraged\, but optional. Dress warmly! Wear a headlamp! No refunds! \nRead on to find out more about Samhain and our Samhain Celebration! \nSamhain is a festival originating from ancient Celtic spiritual traditions. It is the time between the old Celtic year and the new Celtic year.  It is usually celebrated for 3 days and 3 nights around All Hallow’s Eve (Halloween\, Oct 31)\, All Saints Day (Nov1) and All Soul’s Day (Nov 2). It is also called the Feast of the Dead. Since this short time period does not seem to fall into either the old or the new Celtic calendar year\, it has been called “no-time”.  Some consider the time between Samhain and the start of the new year as a time which does not even exist on the Earthly plane. The “time which is no time” was considered to be both very magical and very dangerous. This was the time to bring home the harvest and usher in the “dark half of the year.” It was a time when the veil between this world and the Otherworld was thought to be so thin that the dead could return to sit at the hearths of the living\, and some of the living – especially poets – were able to enter the Otherworld as well. \nOther Interesting Tidbits about Samhain: \n\nSamhain is one of the four quarterly fire festivals on the ancient Celtic calendar. The others are Imbolc\, Beltain\, and Lughnasadh – these are also called cross-quarter days as they take place at the midpoint between Equinoxes and Solstices. Samhain takes place at the midpoint between the Autumnal Equinox and the Winter Solstice.\nIn ancient times\, loved ones who had recently died were remembered and their spirits invited to join the living in the celebratory feast. It was also a time at which those born during the past year were formally welcomed into the community. A community fire was lit and participants took a flame or coal from the communal bonfire back to their home to re-light their own hearth which had gone cold while they were out harvesting. People prepared offerings for the ancestors and for any fairies or other beings of the Otherworld. They would dress in disguise as animals or monsters to no otherworldly being would kidnap them. This is a major source of our modern day Halloween traditions.\nIn the Middle Ages bonfires were lit to protect families and farms from fairies and witches and carved turnips with a glowing coal were made and called jack-o-lanterns! A supper was prepared and enjoyed after inviting ancestors to join the meal giving families a chance to interact with the spirits of the dead and update them on the past year’s news until after the meal was over when the spirits left.\nTrick-or-treating is said to come from ancient Irish and Scottish practices in the nights leading up to Samhain. In Ireland\, “mumming” was the practice of putting on costumes\, going door-to-door and singing songs to the dead. Cakes were given as payment. Pranks also became popular and were typically blames on the fairies.\n\nOn this day we will rejoice as we gather to enjoy the fruits of summer labor and all that has been gathered\, preserved and stored up in preparation for the chill of winter. In “no-time” at all the land will be asleep under a crystal coverlet of white. Join us!

SUMMARY:Ribbons of Intention Fire Ceremony 2019
DESCRIPTION:Ribbons of Intention Fire Ceremony\n\n\n\n\nOctober 4 is the date designated as The Feast of Saint Francis of Assisi. On this date each year we remove the ribbons that are tied to the Tree of Intention (a.k.a. Prayer Tree) in the Kinstone Chapel of Creation and burn them in the fire pit in the Stargazer Circle\, releasing the prayers and intentions written there\, to the Universe. This special event is marked by a brief ceremony that is free and open to the public. \nRibbon Ceremony – 4:30pm – 6:30pm \nWe gather around the Tree of Intention in the Kinstone Chapel of Creation to begin this ceremony. All of the ribbons on the Tree represent intentions left there by visitors to Kinstone over the past year. All those in attendance today will participate in a short service to raise up all the intentions in prayer. Immediately thereafter\, we will all work at removing each ribbon from the Tree and place them into a basket. The basket of ribbons is then set at the feet of the little statue of St. Francis outside the chapel in a symbolic expression of gratitude for the holding of these prayers this year. \nThen\, gathered around the empty Tree\, we will say The Peace Prayer of St. Francis as a single red ribbon\, with the intention for world peace inscribed upon it.  At this time\, everyone present is invited to take a ribbon if they wish\, inscribe a new intention upon it for the coming year and tie it to the tree. A new season has begun! \nThe basket of ribbons is then carried with respect and honor to the Stargazer Circle where a fire is already burning in the fire pit. When gathered there\, we create a sacred space for this ceremony around the fire. We speak of Saint Francis and the significance of his story and how it relates to the Kinstone story. We read stories about him and prayers that are attributed to him. Thank you. \nGENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE KINSTONE NEW MOON WOMEN’S CIRCLE \nWomen have been gathering in a healing\, sharing sister circle at Kinstone on the New Moon since March 2016 when the first International Women’s Day was launched. We average about 20 women at our circles. Sometimes less\, sometimes more. We’ve had as few as 3 and as many as 42 show up! It begins each year with an event in conjunction with International Women’s Day (March 8) and continues each month on the day of the New Moon through November! \nAll women are invited to this circle\, especially women who desire to create supportive relationships with other women\, women who are feeling overwhelmed or stressed and are looking for some rejuvenation\, and women who are looking for ways to find and express the Sacred in their daily lives. \nIn circle\, we join in a short heart meditation\, then we have a time for personal sharing – feelings\, questions\, truths\, stories\, poems\, and more. In this space we are free to celebrate our individuality as well as our collective strength\, fearlessness\, nurturing\, healing and gifts. We end with a shared meal and informal conversations around the tables. Come as you are. It is free to participate; however\, we do share a meal and if you want to eat\, we ask a $5 donation for a meal. Join us! Please share these events with other women who may be interested. SUMMARY:Autumn Equinox SUNSET Observance - Time to Catch the Sun
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we gather to observe the sunset alignment at Kinstone in celebration of the Autumnal Equinox. We will gather near the stones known as Lancelot and Atlas for a short opening rite and reading.  Sunset is at 7:02pm according to the charts\, but is often different when on  the ridge\, so we will begin watching for opportunities to Catch the Sun at 6:30! \nGiven fair weather and clear skies as the sun sets in the West\, we will witness the light as it passes through the “Wise One” (Lancelot) and enlightens the “World” (Atlas). If the sun light is strong enough and unobstructed by clouds on the horizon\, we will see a line of polka-dots on Atlas and a select few folks may be able to “catch the sun” as it aligns with the perforations in the Wise One. Given cloudy or rainy weather\, we will not see the sunset\, but will greet it ceremoniously regardless! \nCOST: Free\, No Registration Required \nDate: Monday\, September 23\, 2019  Time: 6:30pm – 7:30pm: Sunset Observance and Catching of the Sun \nLocation: near the stones known as Atlas and Lancelot at Kinstone \nIf you wish to be given a chance to “catch the sun”\, please Contact Us to sign up by sending an email stating “I want to catch the sun” and include your full name\, email address and phone number with the subject “Catch the sun”. Guests who have signed up will be called in order of sign-up time – as many as we can get through will be given a chance to be photographed with their hands catching the sun – only if weather and sunset conditions permit the phenomenon to occur! \nThis event is outdoors and will be held rain or shine. Please note that we will not see the alignment if it is cloudy or if the horizon is obstructed by evening mist\, fog or clouds. If it is raining\, we may gather indoors inside the Kinstone Education Center. Cancellation will occur in case of a major storm.
