SUMMARY:Kin Spirit Nature Spirit Doll Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Kinstone + Connections = Kinections!\nAre you looking for more opportunities to deepen your connections to Nature\, self and others? Come experience the beauty of creative expression – join us for this art workshop to create a nature spirit doll called a Kin Spirit that includes at least one item found in nature at Kinstone! \n\nCheri Bunker will guide us during this three hour creative workshop. All supplies and tools are provided for your use and you will go home with your finished Kin Spirit nature spirit doll. \nYou will create your very own Kin Spirit beginning with a guided meditation. Questions like\, “Who is my Kin Spirit?”\, “What does she/he represent?”\, and “What part of me does she/he embody?” will help shape the emerging spirit of the doll. \nYou will create your Kin Spirit using natural items such as twigs\, branches\, stems\, flowers\, fibers\, fabric\, stones\, botanicals\, shells\, and more. Items collected from Kinstone will be included in available supplies; however\, there will also be time for the group to go out into nature (weather permitting) to find a special item from the Kinstone Prairie or other parts of the Kinstone grounds to include in your Kin Spirit doll. \nThe limbs and body may be twigs\, tree branches or stems wrapped with your choice of fiber\, fabric or both. Fabric\, fibers\, shells\, stones\, botanicals\, or other items from nature can be used as embellishments. Prefabricated\, molded faces will be available to paint or you may choose one of the pre-painted air dried clay faces\, or other natural item you may find like a nut or stone. Crown your Kin Spirit with fiber or leaves or other natural hair in any way you feel is right: beautiful and flowing\, wild and frizzy\, short and soft\, spiky\, or any other way. If there is something special you would like to add to your own Kin Spirit doll\, please bring it with you! \nAll supplies are provided. The sky is the limit as to what you can create with the added energy of Kinstone. \nNo experience is necessary. There is no right or wrong way to create these beautiful works of art. Just come ready to connect\, create and have fun! \nDate: Saturday\, July 20 \nTime: 1:00pm – 4:00pm \nCost: $45 \nTicket includes instruction and all required materials. \n  \n\nWhat is a Kin Spirit?  \nA Kin Spirit is a spirit doll created from items found in nature\, including items found and collected from the Kinstone property. The doll becomes your kin – someone related to you and even part of you\, with deep soul bonds to you. \nWhat is a Spirit Doll? \nWe love this description from Friends of the Forest: “Spirit dolls are handmade dolls that are infused with the energy and essence of nature. They can be made using materials such as twigs\, leaves\, feathers\, and stones – all found in our natural surroundings. By using these materials\, we not only celebrate the beauty of nature but also bring its healing properties into our lives. \nCreating spirit dolls from nature is a meditative process that allows us to slow down\, connect with our surroundings\, and tap into our creativity. As we gather materials from the earth\, we become more mindful of our environment and develop a deeper appreciation for its wonders. \nMoreover\, spirit dolls serve as powerful reminders of our connection to the natural world. Placing them in our homes or sacred spaces can help create a sense of peace and harmony. They can also serve as talismans for protection or symbols for manifesting intentions.” \n \n\nAbout your Instructor: \nCheri Bunker is a lifelong crafter and has over 20 years of experience presenting and facilitating many different types of classes and programs. She teaches mandala rock art classes\, spirit doll making classes\, Soul Collage ®\,  drumming and movement\, and other workshops! Her specialty is drumming and she created her business Drum It Up! out of her love of the drum and the positive effect it has on all her clients. Cheri facilitates the drumming program HealthRHYTHMS ®  and works with all populations specializing in memory care and disabled population. \nCheri is a REMO HealthRHYTHMS ® Endorsed Group Drumming Facilitator\, Licensed Drumtastic Teacher\, Rhythm2Recovery Facilitator\, Sound Healing Facilitator\, SoulCollage ® Facilitator\, Reiki Master/Teacher\, and Certified Aromatherapist. SUMMARY:2nd Saturday Monthly Community Healing Ritual
DESCRIPTION:Kinstone + Connections = Kinections!\nAre you looking for more opportunities to deepen your connections to self and others? Come explore the mysteries of your inner landscape while sharing energies with the mystical\, magical landscapes of Kinstone. \nJoin us for monthly Kinections through HEALING RITUALS on second Saturdays (May thru Oct). \n\n\n“Ritual is called for because our soul communicates things to us that the body translates as need\, or want\, or absence. So we enter into ritual in order to respond to the call of the soul.” \n― Malidoma Patrice Somé\, Ritual: Power\, Healing and Community\n\n\nJoin us for this monthly community healing ritual led by Erica Thibodeaux\, MS\, LPCC\, occurring on the second Saturday of each month May through October from 3pm to 6pm. \nNo experience necessary. Everyone is welcome. \nDuring these events\, we will come together and create a ritual that emerges from the rhythm of all who are gathered\, their current needs\, and the guidance and support of the elemental beings of the fire (ancestors)\, water\, earth\, nature\, and minerals. \nWhat gets created in group ritual arises out of the participants voices. Together\, we will create something NEW based on the relationships each participant carries with them into our circle from their own inner wisdom that may or may not be already known. \nThis event is highly participatory. You are asked to arrive with an open heart and mind and a willingness to learn from the Elements themselves\, as well as willingness to support your fellow participants. Alcohol and drug use are not allowed during these events. \nCost: These rituals are donation based + the entrance fee to Kinstone ($10). Our hope is to keep these accessible to any who are feeling the call to community and nature-based healing. If the cost of entrance to Kinstone is prohibitive\, please reach out\, we have a scholarship fund for those in need. \nThe energy exchange happening within Kinstone during time is so important. The more who join in\, the more connections can be made and deepened. Come on\, join in\, and make a “kinection”! \n\nMonthly dates / themes; always the second Saturday of the month: \nMay 11 – Dreaming with the Ancestors (FIRE)\nJune 8 – Grief\, Peace\, and Reconciliation (WATER)\nJuly 13 – Purpose and Presence (MINERAL)\nAugust 10 – Mother of Us All (EARTH)\nSeptember 14 – Re-wildling: All Our Relations (NATURE)\nOctober 12 – Dreaming with the Ancestors (FIRE)\n\nAbout the leader: \nErica Thibodeaux\, MS\, LPCC\, is a licensed professional counselor in private practice Winona\, MN. Erica has taught mindfulness meditation in diverse settings such as universities\, corporate environments\, and local organizations.  She uses creative and empowering methods to evoke client-centered transformation and provide individuals\, couples\, and families with tools to take and use over their lifetime. Some of the methods she uses are group and community ritual facilitation\, somatic and body-centered therapy\, focusing\, spiritual re-wilding\, earth and nature-based therapy\, and Indigenous African technologies. Ritual is at the core of all that she offers. \nErica’s awareness and knowledge of ritual and her relationships with the Elements have been inspired and encouraged by her teachers\, Dagara Elder Malidoma Somé and Elder Theresa Sykes Brittany.  Read more about Erica at her website https://ericathibodeaux.com/.

SUMMARY:Summer Solstice Sunrise Observance
DESCRIPTION:Kinstone + Connections = Kinections!\nAre you looking for more opportunities to deepen your connections to Nature\, self and others? Come witness the arrival of Summer\, connect with the seasons\, and share energies with the mystical\, magical landscapes of Kinstone. \n\nEvery Summer Solstice\, we stand and greet the sun as it enters the Great Stone Circle at sunrise. You are invited to join us as we recognize the passing of the seasons from Spring to Summer in this auspicious and sacred stone place. \nIf it is not raining we will gather at 5:00 am in the Great Stone Circle in time to share a very short ritual before we witness the rising of the sun – actual sunrise is at 5:23am but it is usually 5:30 before it visible in the stone circle. Feel free to arrive as early as 4:45am if you wish (that sounds sooooo early – but don’t go back to sleep!). \nGiven fair weather and a clear horizon\, we will watch the sun as it crests the ridge and is ushered through the Summer Solstice Corridor into the circle. It will set its golden glow upon anyone standing in the middle of the circle. Further\, it will cast the shadow of those persons standing in the center onto the stone directly in the path of the sun – the “Shadow Stone”. \nFun fact: The Shadow Stone also marks the exact point of WINTER Solstice SUNSET\, i.e.  summer solstice sunrise and winter solstice sunset occur along the exact same line!  Truly magical! \nGiven cloudy weather\, we will not see the sunrise or our shadow\, but will greet the dawn of Summer ceremoniously regardless! This will be a quiet\, meditative event with a short opening rite and reading. Feel free to bring a reading or quote to share. Witness the arrival of Summer. Send Spring on its way with blessings. \nCOST: admission to Kinstone (pay in advance online OR place your cash admission in the Blue Payment Box attached to the Information Sign Board near the parking areas); No Registration Required \nDate: Thursday\, June 20\, 2024 (rain date: June 21) \nTime: 5:00am – 6:00am \nThis event is outdoors. Please note that we will not see the alignment if it is cloudy or if the horizon is obstructed by morning mist\, fog\, rain\, or clouds. If it is raining or storming this event will be cancelled. Dress for the weather\, be prepared to walk on dewy\, wet grass paths; bring a blanket or camp chair if you wish for your comfort; wear appropriate footwear\, jackets\, scarves\, hats\, and even gloves if needed! Bring your own insect repellent if you wish! \nCancellation will occur in case of RAIN. Cancellations will be posted ONLY on THIS event page and on the corresponding Facebook event page no sooner than 4 hours and no later than 1 hour before the scheduled start time for this event. If this event is cancelled due to weather\, we will try again on the following morning (June 21) at the same time – assuming the weather has improved. \nInteresting fact: The exact time of the astronomical Summer Solstice is Thursday\, June 20 at 3:50 pm CDT.  \nPhoto credit: Kristine Beck

SUMMARY:Drum Making Workshop with Wayne Manthey
DESCRIPTION:“The healing properties of a drum are found in the elements that make it: wood and animal hide. Making personal frame drums is a journey that is individually and spiritually meaningful… The drum symbolizes the heartbeat of life; the heartbeat of community. It is not simply an art form\, but a tool for cleansing\, centering and focusing one’s intentions for health and happiness.” ~ Wayne Manthey \n\n\nIn this educational workshop you will make your own one-sided drum. When people create their own drums they can’t help but develop deep connections to it. The drum you create becomes an extension of yourself and a gateway to greater understanding of your connection to all. \nMaking your own drum is a journey that you will remember for the rest of your life. It takes about 4 hours to make your drum. \n\n\n\nClass size is limited so each person can get enough individual attention during the workshop. All you need to do is show up with a bit of curiosity and a desire to have a drum of your own. That’s all you need\, really! \n\n\nWe start with a pre-constructed frame\, deer hides\, and a bucket of walnut stain. First\, you choose your frame\, lay out the hides\, and take a few moments of reflection to connect to this medium. After cutting out the drum circles\, Wayne will lead the group one step at a time\, through the rest of the process. All you need is to be there and do it! \n\nThere are no words that can completely describe what it feels like to make your own drum. Come experience it for yourself!\n\nIMPORTANT: THERE ARE TWO SEPARATE CLASSES\, YOU WILL SIGN UP FOR ONE AND ONLY ONE DATE \nCHOOSE ONE DATE:  Saturday\, June 1\, 2024  OR  Saturday\, September 7\, 2024 \nTime: 12:30pm to 4:30pm (plan to arrive at least 10 minutes early!) \nLocation: the Kinstone Visitor Center \nCOST:  13 Inch Drum: $155  /  16 Inch Drum: $180 \nTicket includes instruction\, all required materials\, and general admission to Kinstone. \n\n\nThere are No Refunds unless the event is cancelled by Kinstone. \n\n\n\n\n\nAbout your instructor: Wayne Manthey \nBased in Minneapolis\, Minnesota\, USA\, Wayne Manthey is a nationally known drum maker and teacher of drum making. He has been making drums for over 33 years. His approach is spiritual\, honoring the animals who provided the hides and the trees who donated the wood. \nWayne began by making his own drums which eventually became a true calling to create drums and to teach others to do the same. He has a gallery and studio in Minneapolis where buyers and curious individuals can view his works of art. He has a variety of handmade drums at his studio\, each unique and made of animal hides such as elk or deer and accessorized by other materials including antlers and rocks. Visit his website at this link: https://waynemantheydrummaker.com/ \n\n\n\nNOTE: If you can’t make it to this event on either of the dates offered\, please Contact Us to let us know of your interest. If we have enough interest we will bring Wayne back again to do more workshops next year if possible.

SUMMARY:Walk as One at 1 - Labyrinth Walk for World Labyrinth Day
DESCRIPTION:Come walk the Kinstone Labyrinth with Kristine – for World Labyrinth Day. We will NOT have a program\, but rather\, a dedicated time for a group walk of the labyrinth. Come and walk for peace! \nWorld Labyrinth Day is an annual event sponsored by The Labyrinth Society. It is a worldwide action with participants gathering at labyrinths at 1:00pm local time to “Walk as One at One” to co-create a rolling wave of peaceful energy across the globe. Every year on the first Saturday in May thousands of people around the world participate in this moving meditation for world peace and celebration of the labyrinth experience. \nThis is a day to explore and experience labyrinths. Labyrinths have been created since ancient times and have been walked by people of all ages as a mindfulness activity\, to focus\, increase connectedness\, calm anxiety\, lull head chatter and promote mental and emotional wellbeing. Open yourself to the calming and centering space in your own inner landscape as you walk the path. \nPlease join all who gather to Walk as One at One at the Kinstone Labyrinth to celebrate World Labyrinth Day. Bring your kids\, family\, friends! No registration required\, just pay your admission to Kinstone in advance online or pay in the Kinstone Gift Shop when you arrive (we accept cards\, cash\, paypal\, and venmo). Plan to spend some time before or after enjoying the grounds. \nWhat: Group Labyrinth Walk  \nWhere:  Kinstone Labyrinth  \nWhen:  Saturday\, May 4\, 2024\, 1:00pm  (Arrive early enough to get to the labyrinth by 1!) \nCost:  included in admission to Kinstone ($10/person); pay your admission online in advance or in person in the Kinstone Gift Shop when you arrive. \nNo Registration Required \nThis event will be held Rain or Shine! Dress for the weather and wear sturdy walking shoes! Having said that\, if it is storming with thunder\, lightning and/or high winds\, please take shelter and wait to walk until the storm has passed. \nImportant: The Kinstone Labyrinth is located down a steep hill and may not be accessible for persons who have difficulty walking hills and uneven terrain. If you are unable or would prefer not to walk\, we have labyrinth designs printed on paper that folks can use as finger labyrinths. You can pick up a paper labyrinth in the Visitor Center. Use it in the Visitor Center or take it with you to use while sitting in the Dragon’s Keep\, Chapel\, or on the Porch\, or at home. Thank you!! \nWORLD LABYRINTH DAY = MAY 4\, 2024 \nAs stated by The Labyrinth Society\, there are many ways to participate: \n\nWalk a labyrinth at 1:00PM local time to co-create a rolling wave of peace passing from one time zone to the next around the globe.\nWalk alone or with others\nLet your fingers do the walking by using a finger labyrinth\nCreate labyrinth art\nBuild a permanent or temporary labyrinth\n\nWhat is a labyrinth?  It is a single path\, of ancient geometric form\, leading the walker in to a center and back out again. The meandering nature of the path is a metaphor for life experience or perhaps a reflection of our desire to be grounded and find our way to “center” (i.e. become centered). A labyrinth is not to be confused with a maze. A maze is a problem to be solved and designed to create confusion and often frustration. The labyrinth is designed to provide calm\, clarity\, and harmony. The form of the labyrinth is ancient; it spans thousands of years and has been found on every continent except Antarctica. \nHunt for labyrinths wherever you roam by searching the “World Wide Labyrinth Locator” – check it out: how many can you find in your state? how about in your zip code? You may be surprised!

SUMMARY:First Sunrise of Spring - Vernal Equinox Morning Observance
DESCRIPTION:First Sunrise of Spring – Equinox Morning Observance          Watch the First Rays of Spring Sun Enlighten the Heart Stone \nNote: this sunrise event is intentionally scheduled for the day AFTER Equinox; our sunset event is on the actual day of Equinox! \nWeather and snow conditions permitting\, we will be outdoors as we stand and watch the sunrise. If the weather is bad (i.e. winter storms)\, we will cancel – watch for cancellation updates (if any) on the day of the event.  \nThe actual time of Equinox is 10:06 pm CDT on Tuesday – so this (Wednesday morning) is the time to witness the first sunrise of Spring! \nAt Kinstone we have a unique alignment visible only at Equinox at sunrise\, we call it The Heart Alignment. Stand with us in The Three Witnesses sculpture as the sun aligns through the Equinox Window and highlights the Heart Stone. Come and see! \nVernal (Spring) Equinox is an astronomically significant solar event. It occurs when the sun is midpoint in its journey from Winter Solstice to Summer Solstice. The sun appears to rise at due east and set at due west. It is traditionally seen as a time of balance. The light of day and the dark of night are equal. It is the herald of spring; a time for new beginnings\, growth\, and seeking the joy of the light. \nCOST: admission to Kinstone\, $10/person\, (pay in advance online OR pay in person in the Gift Shop upon arrival – please get here early enough to do that before the event begins). No Registration Required. \nDate: Wednesday\, March 20\, 2024  Time: 6:30am – 8:00am \nCome at 6:30 to enjoy the predawn horizons and our brief program before we stand to watch the sun arrive. \nWe will gather in the center of The Three Witnesses sculpture at Kinstone. Given fair weather and clear skies\, we will watch the sun as it crests the ridge and beams through the Equinox Window to light up the heart of the middle standing stone\, known as the “Heart Stone”. Given cloudy weather\, we will not see the sunrise\, but will greet it ceremoniously regardless. \n\n\nThis will be a quiet\, meditative event with a short opening rite and reading to welcome Spring. After the reading\, if the sun is visible\, participants may wish to watch the alignment through the Equinox Window\, see the heart highlighted in the center stone Witness\, sit in the light of the sun\, take photos\, and greet the sunrise. \nDress for the weather and wear appropriate footwear\, jackets\, scarves\, hats and gloves! Bring a camp chair or blanket to sit on\, for your comfort\, if you wish. Be prepared for it to be breezy and cool up here on the ridge! (Many people underestimate the wind and cold.) \nThis event is outdoors and will be held only in good weather. If it is raining or snowing\, this event will be cancelled.  Cancellations will be posted only on this event page and on the corresponding Facebook event page at least one (1) hour before the scheduled start time for this event. \n\nTRADITIONAL INFO: The Celtic Wheel of the Year and other pagan traditions call this day “Ostara”. Ostara originates from celebrations dedicated to the German goddess Eostre. This is considered to be a precursor to the Christian celebration of Easter. The beginning of spring\, Vernal Equinox / Ostara is a good time to plant seeds – both literally and figuratively. This is also a good time to begin acting on the intentions you set during Winter Solstice (Yule\, Dec 2o-22) and St. Brigid’s Day (Imbolc\, Feb 1). The seeds you plant at Vernal Equinox/Ostara will be ready for harvest during the warmer months and the sacred days of  May Day (Beltane\, May 1-5)\, Summer Solstice (Litha\, June 20-22) and  celebrations of the first harvest (Lughnasadh\, August 1). \nHAPPY SPRING! \nActual sunrise is expected at 7:08am for our location. However\, with the topography specific to Kinstone\, the time we witness it may be just a bit later. \nInteresting fact: The exact time of the astronomical Vernal Equinox is Tuesday\, March 19\, 2024\, at 10:06pm CDT.   \nPhoto credit: Kristine Beck

If the sunlight is strong enough and unobstructed by clouds on the horizon\, we will see the alignment and a few folks may be able to “catch the sun”. We will begin watching for opportunities to Catch the Sun immediately after our readings. \nDress for the weather and wear appropriate footwear\, jackets\, scarves\, hats and gloves. After that\, anyone attending can try this on a first-come basis. As many as we can get through will be given a chance to be photographed with their hands catching the sun – bring a friend who can be your photographer! \n\nHAPPY SPRING! \nActual sunset is expected to occur at 7:18pm for our location. SUMMARY:Samhain Stories Around the Fire and Under the Moon
DESCRIPTION:Samhain Stories Around the Fire and Under the Moon\nSacred Storytelling with Storyteller\, Tracy Chipman\n\nJoin us to hear tales told by Storyteller Tracy Chipman around the fire in the middle of the stones of the Stargazer Circle\, under the Full Moon\, on the threshold of Samhain. A very auspicious and atmospheric time and place! Set aside this time and gather around to hear sacred stories tuned to this season\, remembering the ancestors\, welcoming in the harvest and ushering in the dark half of the year. \nSamhain is an ancient Celtic tradition celebrating the end of the old year – the sowing\, growing and harvesting is complete\, and the new year opens into the dreamtime of winter.  It is also believed that during the threshold of Samhain the boundaries between the physical world and the spirit world dissolve to some degree\, allowing (often unexpected) interactions between humans and the denizens of realms beyond our own. Samhain energies offer deeper connections\, inviting us to step forward into a new season and a new relationship with our selves and all beings – both visible and invisible – that inhabit our lives. We are kin. \nStories and the art of storytelling transcend time and space; they are set deep in our bones. Our stories\, both ancient and new\, are transformational and absolutely essential to all life on this planet. They offer a way for us to develop the skills to listen more deeply\, share more authentically\, imagine more vividly – far beyond the programming of colonization\, and ultimately\, to find our way back to awe\, reverence and wonderment.  \nWe need the evocative truths of old myth and folklore to weave in\, with\, and through the fabric of our world\, our communities\, and our own stories\, to help us re-align with and remember that we are part of a much larger whole. There is always time for and always a need for stories to be told. Come. Listen. Find some threads of story that align with your own and weave them into your life under the Full Moon with us at Kinstone. It will be awe-some and wonder-full! \nDate: Saturday\, October 28\, Full Hunter’s Moon\nTime: 7:00pm – 8:30pm  – PLEASE arrive at least 10 to 20 minutes early to get settled!\nLocation: Kinstone\, S3439 Cole Bluff Lane\, Fountain City\, WI 54629 – the plan is to gather around the fire in the Stargazer Circle; however\, if rain\, snow or wind keep us from that\, we will meet around a smaller fire in the protection of the Porch on the Education Building or inside the Education Building if storming. \nCOST:  Regular rate – $40/person / Early Bird rate – $30 by October 14\, 2023\nPre-registration is required! Seats are limited so get your ticket early! Important: once purchased\, there are No Refunds. \nIMPORTANT: This event will be held rain or shine! If weather is inclement we will meet around a small fire on the Porch and also open the Kinstone Education Center for comfort. No refunds! \nWhat to bring: \n\nBring your own chair\, cushion\, or mat for sitting on if you desire\nMasks are welcome (disguise yourself so the spirits that roam across “the veil” do not recognize you and take you off to the Otherworld!)\nBring an insulated mug with a hot beverage or for partaking in provided tea / hot cocoa\nDress very warmly! Layers\, wool socks\, boots\, mittens\, hats\, scarves! \nBring a blanket or shawl to keep you extra warm if needed\nBring a flashlight\n\nNote: Tracy’s book is available at the Kinstone Gift Shop – pick up a copy while you are here! \n\nAbout Tracy Chipman \nTracy Chipman is a storyteller\, somatics/yoga instructor\, mentor and writer. She is a Wisconsin native who has traveled far and wide\, and now resides in northern Wisconsin\, occupying the traditional territories of the Anishinaabe peoples. She has been a storyteller for more than 27 years. In March 2023 Tracy published her first book\, Borealis Mundi – Resting in Place\, Loss & Grace. Tracy weaves the ancient art of oral storytelling with writing and somatic practices to create unforgettable experiences inviting us towards more embodied experiences with the living\, animate world. Visit her website\, tracychipman.net\, to learn more about her work. \n\n“I hope you will go out and let stories happen to you\, and that you will work them\, water them with your blood and tears and your laughter till they bloom\, till you yourself burst into bloom.” ~ Clarissa Pinkola Estes \n\nRead on to find out more about Samhain! \nSamhain is a festival originating from ancient Celtic spiritual traditions. It is the time between the old Celtic year and the new Celtic year.  It is usually celebrated for 3 days and 3 nights around All Hallow’s Eve (Halloween\, Oct 31)\, All Saints Day (Nov1) and All Soul’s Day (Nov 2). It is also called the Feast of the Dead. Since this short time period does not seem to fall into either the old or the new Celtic calendar year\, it has been called “no-time”.  Some consider the time between Samhain and the start of the new year as a time which does not even exist on the Earthly plane. The “time which is no time” was considered to be both very magical and very dangerous. This was the time to bring home the harvest and usher in the “dark half of the year.” It was a time when the veil between this world and the Otherworld was thought to be so thin that the dead could return to sit at the hearths of the living\, and some of the living – especially poets and storytellers – were able to enter the Otherworld as well. \nOther Interesting Tidbits about Samhain: \n\nSamhain is one of the four quarterly fire festivals on the ancient Celtic calendar. The others are Imbolc\, Beltain\, and Lughnasadh – these are also called cross-quarter days as they take place at the midpoint between Equinoxes and Solstices. Samhain takes place at the midpoint between the Autumnal Equinox and the Winter Solstice.\nIn ancient times\, loved ones who had recently died were remembered and their spirits invited to join the living in the celebratory feast. It was also a time at which those born during the past year were formally welcomed into the community. A community fire was lit and participants took a flame or coal from the communal bonfire back to their home to re-light their own hearth which had gone cold while they were out harvesting. People prepared offerings for the ancestors and for any fairies or other beings of the Otherworld. They would dress in disguise as animals or monsters to no otherworldly being would kidnap them. This is a major source of our modern day Halloween traditions.\nIn the Middle Ages bonfires were lit to protect families and farms from fairies and witches and carved turnips with a glowing coal were made and called jack-o-lanterns! A supper was prepared and enjoyed after inviting ancestors to join the meal giving families a chance to interact with the spirits of the dead and update them on the past year’s news until after the meal was over when the spirits left.\nTrick-or-treating is said to come from ancient Irish and Scottish practices in the nights leading up to Samhain. In Ireland\, “mumming” was the practice of putting on costumes\, going door-to-door and singing songs to the dead. Cakes were given as payment. Pranks also became popular and were typically blames on the fairies.\n\nOn this day we will rejoice as we gather to hear stories to celebrate the season. Join us!

DESCRIPTION:Betwixt\, Between\, and Beyond – Writing with the Ancestors\nA Writing Workshop with Storyteller & Author\, Tracy Chipman\nOn the Full Hunter’s Moon\n\nJoin us for this special writer’s workshop with Storyteller and Author Tracy Chipman at Kinstone. This workshop offers a way for us to explore relationships with ancestors and the more-than-human worlds in the liminal space on the threshold of Samhain. Participants will engage in writing as well as walking\, meditation\, reflection\, gentle embodiment practices\, and sharing. \nWhat will you find in the spaces betwixt\, between and beyond yourself when you put your pen to paper here at Kinstone on the Full Hunter’s Moon?  A walk amidst the standing stones of the Great Stone Circle\, winding your way along the Serpent of Transformation\, or sheltering your soul in the chamber of the Kinstone Dolmen for a spell may be just what is needed to inspire and elicit your written words for the day. Come with your pen and paper\, an open heart\, and a willingness to step forward through thresholds open only to you at this time and in this place. No writing or meditation experience is necessary. Everyone is welcome. Samhain energies offer deeper connections\, inviting us to step forward into a new season and a new relationship with ourselves and all beings – both visible and invisible – that inhabit our lives. We are kin. \nDate: Saturday\, October 28\, Full Hunter’s Moon\nTime: 3:00pm to 5:00pm\nLocation: Kinstone\, S3439 Cole Bluff Lane\, Fountain City\, WI 54629 \nCOST:   Regular rate – $40/person / Early Bird rate – $30 by October 14\, 2023\nSeats are limited so get your ticket early! No refunds! \nWhat to bring: \n\nBring your preferred writing supplies – notebook\, pen\, pencil\, tablet\, laptop\, or whatever you like to work with best.\nA blanket or cushion\, if you wish\, for your comfort; chairs will be available to all for our indoor sessions.\nYour own water bottle / travel mug. Note: water\, coffee and tea will be provided; and we encourage you to bring your own water bottle/travel mug to drink from.\nBring your own umbrella\, sunglasses\, sunhat\, or other personal items you desire for your comfort; dress for the weather and wear sturdy walking shoes for outdoor portions of this class (weather permitting)\n\n  \n\n\n\nAbout Tracy Chipman\nTracy Chipman is a storyteller\, somatics/yoga instructor\, mentor and writer. We will be walking\, NOT running (unless you really want to ). Light snacks and beverages will also be provided.\n3. You do NOT have to participate in the 5k to attend the bonfire ceremony\, HOWEVER\, there is still a $10 cash admission fee required to enter Kinstone.\n4. If you would like to provide a donation please visit the following link:Portage for a Purpose NAMI Donations\n5. If you cannot attend\, but you want to write a message to a loved one to be sent up during the bonfire ceremony\, feel free to visit the following link before Noon on Oct 13th: Portage for a Purpose Messages\n\nWe hope to see you there!    Keep reading to get ALL the Details!\n\n\n\n\nJoin us for this unique 5k event that includes walkers and some intrepid folks who will carry canoes the entire distance! Evan Hansen will portage the original canoe during this 5k event and bring it again to rest on the stone known as “Eternity” (where his original journey ended). Will you walk with him? Will you carry a canoe as well? Walking this mostly uphill trek\, whether carrying a canoe or not\, can be seen as a symbol of carrying the burdens of life that often overwhelm us; a way to show support for all of us that carry heavy burdens often invisible to our friends and family. Walk with us! \nKinstone is excited to announce that our own Education Center Building is the place where the original canoe with all the signatures will be displayed for the foreseeable future.  It is poignant and fitting that this canoe will reside right where the original journey ended: KINSTONE! \nWe are thrilled that others will be able to visit the canoe. It will be a visual reminder of those who have been lost due to suicide and a symbol that community is a necessary ingredient for the overall wellbeing – physical\, emotional\, mental\, and spiritual – of all. \nThe goal of this 5k event is to raise  awareness about suicide and suicide prevention as we commemorate the 313 mile portage completed by Evan Hansen that finished in Great Stone Circle at Kinstone in 2021. Read more about the history below. \n5k Event Details: \nDate: Saturday\, October 14th \nStarting Time: 10:00am \nFee :  $10/person \nWalkers/Portagers:  pay the fee and register at the start of the 5k event at the sign-in table at the starting location  (no pre-registration required) \nEveryone else:  the $10 admission can be paid in advance online or in person in the Gift Shop (cash\, credit/debit\, apple pay\, venmo\, paypal)\, or in the Blue Payment boxes (cash only) on the Information Kiosks near the parking areas. \nStarting Location:  Bluff Siding Road near the intersection of WI HWY 35 and County Road M\, near George’s Lounge (address for reference: W428 Bluff Siding Rd\, Fountain City\, WI\, 54629) \nEnding Location:  Kinstone\, in the Great Stone Circle at the stone known as “Eternity”  (address for reference: S3439 Cole Bluff Lane\, Fountain City\, WI\, 54629) \nFire Ceremony:  After all walkers and portagers have completed the trek and after everyone’s offerings have been made and messages written\, there will be a ceremony at the Stargazer Circle. We hope to have a fire and the opportunity to burn our messages. However\, with the ultra dry conditions we have been experiencing there may still be burn bans in place. If no fire is possible\, we will have an alternative method of honoring the offering and messages of all. \nRefreshments: There will be refreshments available in the Kinstone Education Center during the dedication ceremony and installation of the canoe inside. \nImportant Details for Participants and Supporters of Participants: \nBring flowers or other natural offerings if you wish as the Eternity Stone will serve as a symbolic grave for all those lost to suicide. \nThere will be paper and pens available so you can write messages to loved ones.  These messages will be ceremoniously burned in a bonfire in the Stargazer Circle (burn conditions permitting!). If there are drought related burning bans\, we will collect the messages to be held until conditions allow for a fire. \nPlease stay until the end as we will be dedicating the occasion by installing the original canoe and special plaque in the Kinstone Education Center building for posterity. \nEvan Hansen wrote a book called “Into the Wind” about his experiences on his 313 mile portage in 2021. This book is available for sale in the Kinstone Gift Shop. It is a compelling and relevant read. Get your copy here! \n50% of all admissions to Kinstone for the entire day\, whether related to this event or not\, shall be donated to NAMI SE MN. \nSpecial messages for your loved ones can be created in several ways\, please take time to offer a message of love and remembrance whether you are able to be present for this event or not. Here are the ways you can leave messages: \na)  Directly at Kinstone on the day of the event\, write a message as part of our fire ceremony \nb) Online at NAMI at this link: Portage for a Purpose Messages  Messages received before Noon\, Friday\, October 13 will be collected and brought to Kinstone for our fire ceremony \nc) Online at NAMI at this link: Paddles for a Purpose Messages –  where you can request your loved one’s name to be inscribed on a canoe paddle. \nIf you wish to make a donation directly to NAMI in memory of your loved ones\, you can do so  in person at Kinstone during this event or anytime online at this link:  Portage for a Purpose NAMI Donations \nThank you! Your support is greatly appreciated. \n  \nHistorical Perspective on Portage For A Purpose \nIn 2021\, Evan Hansen portaged a canoe over 300 miles across the state of Minnesota to raise awareness about suicide and suicide prevention. He called his journey “Portage for a Purpose”. Along the way\, he collected names and stories of people with loved ones who died due to suicide. Those names were written on the canoe. He ended that portage/walk in the center of Kinstone’s own Great Stone Circle at the stone known at “Eternity”.  Throughout this project he raised over $50\,000 for the National Alliance of Mental Illness (NAMI SE MN). \nIn 2022\, he commemorated the anniversary of that effort with a public 5k portage / walk that traced the last five kilometers of his original journey – a mostly uphill trek. Now\, in conjunction with Kinstone\, Evan will host this Portage for a Purpose 5k Event again!  Last year (2022) we had over 20 walkers and 2 portagers. We expect many more participants this year and definitely more people carrying canoes in this unique 5k event! Will you be one of them? \nTogether\, Kinstone and Evan Hansen offer this event as a force for good; it is one way we can provide a positive impact and support for those who may be struggling with mental illness. \n\n\n\n\n“Anything you do from the soulful self will help lighten the burdens of the world. Anything. You have no idea what the smallest word\, the tiniest generosity\, can cause to be set in motion…Mend the part of the world that is within your reach.” ~Clarissa Pinkola Estes \n\n\n\n\n  \nVisit Evan Hansen’s facebook page\, Portage for a Purpose\, for more information about him and his mission.

SUMMARY:Ribbons of Intention Fire Ceremony
DESCRIPTION:Ribbons of Intention Fire Ceremony\n\n\n\n\nOctober 4 is the date designated as The Feast of Saint Francis of Assisi. On this date each year we remove the ribbons that are tied to the Tree of Intention in the Kinstone Chapel of Creation and burn them in a sacred fire in the Stargazer Circle\, releasing the intentions written there\, to God or the Universe\, to be fuel for their manifestation. This special event is marked by a brief ceremony. \nDate: Wednesday\, October 4  Time: Noon – 1:30pm \n\nCost: admission to Kinstone (pay in advance online OR place your cash payment in the Blue Payment Box attached to the Information Sign Board near the parking areas). \n\nOn this day\, the inscribed ribbons are all removed from the Tree of Intention. We gather at the Chapel of Creation and call down peace for the world and for ourselves as we stand around the newly empty tree. We place a single red ribbon upon the tree as a symbol of world peace.  All present are invited to add ribbons of intention to tree – intentions that will be held in reverence here for a full cycle of seasons until the following October 4th. We then proceed to the Stargazer Circle where we create a sacred space for this ceremony around the fire. We speak of Saint Francis and the significance of his story and how it relates to the Kinstone story. We read stories about him and hear prayers that are attributed to him. We state our purpose in burning the ribbons; we profess our willingness to release attachment to the outcome and express profound gratitude that our needs will be provided for in creative and sometimes unexpected ways.  The ribbons are then put into the fire. As they burn\, all the prayers and all the intentions are released. We end with a prayer of thanksgiving. \nNo registration is required. \n\nWhy this day\, the Feast Day of Saint Francis? \nThe Chapel of Creation is a building created with many beautiful images of our Earth artistically displayed in the walls. The artwork was inspired by The Canticle of Creation or The Canticle of Brother Sun and Sister Moon\, a poem written by St. Francis of Assisi in the 1200’s. He is the patron saint of animals and ecologists due to his overwhelming love of the natural world. He believed that nature itself was the mirror of God. He called all creatures and natural wonders his “brothers” and “sisters”\, or his “kin”.  In this way\, Francis has become the patron saint of Kinstone.  To honor his life and his example of love of creation\, service to humanity\, and selfless devotion to God\, we perform this ceremony on his feast day.
