SUMMARY:Winter Solstice Sunrise Observance
DESCRIPTION:This event will be held as scheduled as long as the weather is reasonably good. We will be outdoors as we stand and watch the sunrise. If the weather is bad (i.e. winter storm)\, we will cancel – watch for cancellation updates (if any) by 10pm the night before the event.  \nCome acknowledge the Winter Solstice by watching the sunrise with us and standing in the alignment in the Great Stone Circle. This will be a quiet\, meditative event with a short opening rite and reading to help us welcome Winter and send Autumn on its way with blessings. Join us to celebrate as Autumn passes  the seasonal “baton” to Winter. \nCOST: admission to Kinstone (pay in advance online OR pay in person at the Kinstone Visitor Center upon arrival); No Registration Required \nDate: Saturday\, December 21\, 2024  Time: 7:00am – 8:00am \nWHAT TO BRING: feel free to bring a poem about winter\, winter solstice\, snow\, or other winter theme to share. \nIMPORTANT:  We will gather at 7am in the Kinstone Visitor Center. Depending on snow levels and weather we will determine exactly where we will hold the short program that is scheduled to start at 7:10am. If possible\, we will gather around a blazing fire in the Stargazer Circle. If it is too cold and/or there is too much snow on the ground\, we may instead gather inside the building or around a smaller fire near the Porch of the Visitor Center. Thank you in advance for your patience as we figure out exactly where to be for the program portion. \nWeather and snow conditions permitting\, we will proceed together from the short program area to the center of the Great Stone Circle. Given fair weather and clear skies\, we will watch the sun as it crests the ridge and beams through the Chair Stones into the center of the Circle. \nNote: Actual sunrise is at 7:38am and given the topography at Kinstone it will be closer to 7:50am when we can see the sun from the center of the circle on a clear day. \nDress in layers! We may be indoors for part of this and then proceed outdoors later. Bring what winter gear you need for the weather and wear appropriate footwear\, boots\, scarves\, hats\, extra layers and gloves. Expect it to be colder and windier than you think. In snowy years\, be prepared to walk some distance through snow and on uneven (perhaps icy – or muddy\, slippery) paths to get to the circle. \nParking may be very limited if there is snow on the ground.  If there is not much snow\, please park in the grassy parking area known as the Riverview Parking Area. If there is a lot of snow\, we will be limited to parking in the small lot by the Visitor Center (Staff Parking area). If this is the case\, please park as closely to others as possible to make enough room for all. Note: we highly discourage parking along the road\, however; if you absolutely must park along the road due to snow in our Staff and Visitor Parking areas\, please make sure you put on your 4-way flashing lights while parked there for this short event and do not park in front of any neighbors’ property or driveways. \nThis event is planned to be held outdoors.  It will be cancelled in case of snow storm or bad weather. Please note that we will not see the alignment if it is cloudy or if the horizon is obstructed by morning mist\, fog\, rain\, snow or clouds. You are invited to join us as we recognize the passing of the seasons from Spring to Summer in this auspicious and sacred stone place. \nIf it is not raining we will gather at 5:00 am in the Great Stone Circle in time to share a very short ritual before we witness the rising of the sun – actual sunrise is at 5:23am but it is usually 5:30 before it visible in the stone circle. Feel free to arrive as early as 4:45am if you wish (that sounds sooooo early – but don’t go back to sleep!). \nGiven fair weather and a clear horizon\, we will watch the sun as it crests the ridge and is ushered through the Summer Solstice Corridor into the circle. It will set its golden glow upon anyone standing in the middle of the circle. Further\, it will cast the shadow of those persons standing in the center onto the stone directly in the path of the sun – the “Shadow Stone”. \nFun fact: The Shadow Stone also marks the exact point of WINTER Solstice SUNSET\, i.e.  summer solstice sunrise and winter solstice sunset occur along the exact same line!  Truly magical! \nGiven cloudy weather\, we will not see the sunrise or our shadow\, but will greet the dawn of Summer ceremoniously regardless! DESCRIPTION:Join us to celebrate the passing of the seasons from Autumn to Winter. Come acknowledge the Winter Solstice by watching the sunrise with us and seeing the alignment in the Great Stone Circle at Kinstone! This will be a quiet\, meditative event with a short opening rite and reading to help us welcome Winter and send Autumn on its way with blessings. \nCOST: Free\, No Registration Required. Free will donations appreciated! \nDate: Monday\, December 21\, 2020  Time: 7:00 am – 8:00am  (Sunrise Gathering) \nIMPORTANT: Due to COVID we will NOT meet in the Education Center! We will hold a short program OUTDOORS near the Porch of the Education Center Building starting at 7am. Depending on snow levels and weather we will then decide if we go out to the circle or not. Weather and snow conditions permitting\, we will proceed together to the center of the Great Stone Circle. Given fair weather and clear skies\, we will watch the sun as it crests the ridge and beams through the Chair Stones to light up anyone standing in the middle of the circle. Note: Actual sunrise is at 7:38am and given the topography at Kinstone it will be closer to 7:50am when we may see the sun from the center of the circle. \nThis event is planned to be held outdoors ONLY.  It will be cancelled in case of snow storm or bad weather. Please note that we will not see the alignment if it is cloudy or if the horizon is obstructed by morning mist\, fog\, rain\, snow or clouds. If it is raining or snowing\, or if the snow on the ground is too deep for walking through\, we will CANCEL.  Cancellations will be posted on THIS event page and on the corresponding Facebook event page at least 1 hour before the scheduled start time for this event. \nDress for the weather and wear appropriate footwear\, boots\, scarves\, hats\, extra layers and gloves! Expect it to be colder and windier than you think! Be prepared to walk some distance through snow and on uneven (perhaps icy) paths to get to the circle! \nParking is limited – especially in winter. Please park in the small lot by the Education Center (Staff Parking area)\, park as closely to others as possible to make enough room for all. Note: we highly discourage parking along the road\, however; if you absolutely must park along the road due to snow in our Staff and Visitor Parking areas\, please make sure you put on your 4-way flashing lights while parked there for this short event. \nCancellation will occur in case of a major storm. DESCRIPTION:6/21/20 4:15am update: There is heavy mist on the ridge\, but I will be in the circle to see what happens at sunrise. Any who can join\, please do – and drive carefully in this fog! \n6/20/20 4:15am update: THIS EVENT IS CANCELLED DUE TO RAIN! So sorry we cannot meet the sun today in the Circle! Happy Solstice! p.s. if the weather holds promise tomorrow\, we will meet on 6/21/20 at 5:15 instead!  \nEvery Summer Solstice\, we stand and greet the sun as it enters the Great Stone Circle at sunrise. You are invited to join us as we recognize the passing of the seasons from Spring to Summer in this auspicious and sacred stone place. \nIf it is not raining we will gather at 5:15 am in the Great Stone Circle in time to witness the rising of the sun – actual sunrise is at 5:23am but it is usually 5:30 before it visible in the stone circle. Due to COVID\, we prefer not to meet indoors\, so\, if it is raining\, we will CANCEL the event. \nGiven fair weather and a clear horizon\, we will watch the sun as it crests the ridge and is ushered through the Summer Solstice Corridor into the circle. It will set its golden glow upon anyone standing in the middle of the circle. Further\, it will cast the shadow of those persons standing there onto the stone directly in the path of the sun – the “Shadow Stone”.  Fun fact: This stone also marks the exact point of WINTER Solstice SUNSET\, i.e.  summer solstice sunrise and winter solstice sunset occur along the exact same line!  Truly magical! \nGiven cloudy weather\, we will not see the sunrise or the shadow\, but will greet the dawn of Summer ceremoniously regardless! This will be a quiet\, meditative event with a short opening rite and reading. Feel free to bring a reading or quote to share. Witness the arrival of Summer. Send Spring on its way with blessings. Although the actual sunrise is at 5:23am\, the topography of Kinstone means it will be just a little (about 8-10 minutes) later than that. Be there early\, just in case! Feel free to arrive as early as 5:00am if you wish.
