SUMMARY:Vernal Equinox Sunrise Observance
DESCRIPTION:Vernal (Spring) Equinox Morning Observance\nWatch the Sunrise Alignment Enlighten the Heart Stone \nUPDATE Monday\, March 18\, 7pm: Due to lots of snow and ice\, we may not be able to get out to see the alignment! SAFETY FIRST! We will begin this event inside the Kinstone Education Center – so plan to go directly to the building when you arrive. Parking is limited – don’t get stuck by parking in the snow. Park in the little gravel lot next to the Education Center – pull in tightly so we can fit as many cars as possible. THANK YOU.  If the wind chill is still as bad as it is today\, please bring extra warm layers if we do decide to go outside you will need them! \nWeather and snow conditions permitting\, we will be outdoors as we stand and watch the sunrise. If the weather is bad\, we will cancel – watch for cancellation updates (if any) on the day of the event.  \nAt Kinstone we have a unique alignment visible only at Equinox at sunrise\, we call it The Heart Alignment. Stand with us in The Three Witnesses sculpture as the sun aligns through the Equinox Window and highlights the Heart Stone. Come and see! \nVernal (Spring) Equinox is an astronomically significant solar event. It occurs when the sun is midpoint in its journey from Winter Solstice to Summer Solstice. The sun appears to rise at due east and set at due west. It is traditionally seen as a time of balance. The light of day and the dark of night are equal. It is the herald of spring; a time for new beginnings\, growth\, and seeking the joy of the light. \nCOST: admission to Kinstone (pay in advance online OR place your cash admission in the Blue Payment Box attached to the Information Sign Board near the parking areas); No Registration Required \nDate: Monday\, March 20\, 2023  Time: 6:30am – 8:00am \nActual sunrise is expected at 7:10am for our location. However\, with the topography specific to Kinstone\, the time we witness it may be just a bit later. Come at 6:30 to enjoy the predawn horizons and our brief program before we stand to watch the sun arrive. \nWe will gather in the center of The Three Witnesses sculpture at Kinstone. Given fair weather and clear skies\, we will watch the sun as it crests the ridge and beams through the Equinox Window to light up the heart of the middle standing stone\, known as the “Heart Stone”. Given cloudy weather\, we will not see the sunrise\, but will greet it ceremoniously regardless. \n\n\nThis will be a quiet\, meditative event with a short opening rite and reading to welcome Spring. After the reading\, if the sun is visible\, participants may wish to watch the alignment through the Equinox Window\, see the heart highlighted in the center stone Witness\, sit in the light of the sun\, take photos\, and greet the sunrise. \nDress for the weather and wear appropriate footwear\, jackets\, scarves\, hats and gloves! Bring a camp chair or blanket to sit on\, for your comfort\, if you wish. Be prepared for it to be breezy and cool up here on the ridge! (Many people underestimate the wind and cold.) \nThis event is outdoors and will be held only in good weather. If it is raining or snowing\, this event will be cancelled.  Cancellations will be posted only on this event page and on the corresponding Facebook event page at least one (1) hour before the scheduled start time for this event. \n\nTRADITIONAL INFO: The Celtic Wheel of the Year and other pagan traditions call this day “Ostara”. Ostara originates from celebrations dedicated to the German goddess Eostre. This is considered to be a precursor to the Christian celebration of Easter. The beginning of spring\, Vernal Equinox / Ostara is a good time to plant seeds – both literally and figuratively. This is also a good time to begin acting on the intentions you set during Winter Solstice (Yule\, Dec 2o-22) and St. Brigid’s Day (Imbolc\, Feb 1). The seeds you plant at Vernal Equinox/Ostara will be ready for harvest during the warmer months and the sacred days of  May Day (Beltane\, May 1-5)\, Summer Solstice (Litha\, June 20-22) and  celebrations of the first harvest (Lughnasadh\, August 1). \nHAPPY SPRING! \nInteresting fact: The exact time of the astronomical Vernal Equinox is Monday\, March 20\, 2023\, at 4:24pm CDT.   \nPhoto credit: Kristine Beck

SUMMARY:Spring Plein Air Paint Day & Art Sale
DESCRIPTION:SPECIAL NOTE Regarding COVID: THIS EVENT IS STILL ON! We are planning to run this as an all-outdoor event with proper social distancing and personal space both during the painting time as well as during the sale. All sales will be handled outdoors. \nArtists of every painting medium and every skill level are invited to create plein air works at our Spring Plein Air Paint Day & Art Sale on Sunday\, June 14\, 2020\, from 9am-4:00pm at Kinstone. Participating artists may exhibit and sell any works produced during this event between 4pm and 6pm OUTSIDE of the Kinstone Education Building and on the Porch. Due to this being our very first plein air event and due to the limited\, 2-hour sales opportunity on this day\, Kinstone will retain NO part of any sales made by participating artists for this event only. Artists must remove their artwork by 6:30pm. \n—————————————————————————————————- \nJust one week before Solstice\, the lovely spirit of Spring will be in fine fiddle in June. She will already be saying farewell as greens intensify\, blues deepen and she strews the ground with fair flowers to prepare the way for Summer. Come out to paint Spring’s portrait as only you can before she is gone! \n—————————————————————————————————- \nThe cost to participate is $5/person (i.e. equal to and included in the price of admission to Kinstone!)  No pre-registration is required. Registration is from 7:30-8:30am onsite. Artists must sign a liability waiver upon Registration. Limited options for food and refreshments (e.g. coffee\, tea\, hot cocoa\, soda\, sparkling water) will be available for purchase throughout the day. \nIn case of rain there are several shelters artists may opt to work in including inside the Dolmen\, the yurt\, straw-clay cabin\, Dragon’s Keep pavilion\, Chapel of Creation\, the classroom\, and the Porch on the Education Center. \nKinstone will maintain its normal open hours (10am to 6pm) to the public throughout this event. Anyone visiting Kinstone (admission is $5/person) on this day is invited to watch\, interact with\, enjoy and perhaps even purchase the resulting work of the participating artists! \nDate:  Sunday\, June 14\, 2020 \nTime: \n\nArtist Registration: 7:30am – 8:30am\nArtist Painting: 9:00am – 4:00pm (Artists wishing to exhibit their work should finish painting by 3:30pm or in time to get their completed works to the exhibit area and ready for sale by 4pm.)\nArt Exhibition/Sale: 4:00pm – 6:00pm (Artists must remove their artwork by 6:30pm.)\n\nLocation: Kinstone Megalithic Garden\, S3439 Cole Bluff Lane\, Fountain City\, WI \nWhat to bring: \n\nAll your own art supplies\, chair and any other set up you require.\nDress for the weather and wear sturdy walking shoes.\nAn umbrella\, if you wish\, for shade or in case of rain!\nYour own water bottle / travel mug. We encourage you to bring your own water bottle/travel mug to drink from. This is a sustainable practice we promote for all events at Kinstone. If you forget yours\, don’t worry\, we’ve got you covered!\n\nSPRING at Kinstone is full of brilliant greens and golds. Early prairie flowers are in bloom\, butterflies are out\, and choruses of robins and red winged black birds fill the air. Leafy greens are popping up in the raised beds and trees are newly leafed out. The standing stones are bathing their feet in lush clover and reaching up to touch fresh June skies. The pond is alive with chirruping frogs and ripples made by sweet\, Driftless breezes. The paths draw you on to the winding way of the labyrinth\, the open chamber of the dolmen\, the intimacy of the Circle of Mystery\, and so much more. Curvilinear rows of arborvitae and spruce hug the land and shelter you as you immerse yourself in color\, light\, and movement.  \n\nThis is our very first plein air event and we are quite excited to welcome artists from near and far! Do you love painting outdoors? Are you inspired by the beauty of Nature? Do the standing stones and sacred\, intentional spaces of Kinstone intrigue you? Join us! Note that we also have Summer and Autumn Plein Air paint days coming up later this season\, each has slightly different details\, so please check out those events and plan to participate then\, too! \nKinstone is a contemplative\, park-like place with spectacular views\, intriguing stonework\, and natural buildings. This stunning 30-acre bluff-top property has a fabulous view of the Mississippi River as well as over 100 standing stones including three stone circles\, megalithic dolmen\, classic 7-circuit labyrinth\, thatched\, cordwood chapel\, dry-stack stone sculpture\, natural buildings\, food forest gardens\, raised bed gardens\, 2-acre prairie\, pond\, woodlands\, fields and more. \n\nOur mission states: “Kinstone blends conscious care of the Earth with art to form sacred spaces that invite and inspire people to connect with and experience the creative power of the land to transform\, energize and revive the body\, mind and spirit.” To further this mission\, we are offering three Plein Air Paint Days in 2020 to connect artists and the sacred beauty of the land: Spring\, Summer\, and Autumn – each one with slightly different details. We are excited about all the possibilities and creative wonder that will manifest from this connection. \n\nSo\, What is Plein Air Painting? \nEn Plein Air is a French expression meaning “in the open air” and it describes the practice of artists painting outdoors with the subject directly in view rather than in a studio. Plein air artists work to capture the spirit and essence of a landscape or subject by incorporating natural light\, color and movement into their art. \nAccording to Wikipedia\, in the mid-19th century\, working in natural light became particularly important to various artists and schools of art (e.g. the Barbizon school\, Hudson River School\, and Impressionists). Wikipedia goes on to say French impressionist painters such as Monet\, Pissarro\, Cezanne\, Van Gogh and Renoir advocated plein air painting and much of their work was done outdoors. \nThere has been a recent revival of interest in plein air painting in the United States. Groups of plein air artists have begun gathering together to paint at single locations or within certain geographic boundaries giving them a chance to share their talents and creativity with the public and with one another. \nFind out more about plein air painting and related events by visiting any of the following websites: \nWisconsin Plein Air Painters Association (WIPAPA) \nOutdoor Painters of Minnesota (OPM) \nPlein Air Painters of America (PAPA)

Happy Equinox to all!  \nUPDATE 3/15/2020: This event is STILL ON and will remain so as long as the weather is good and there are no further mandates regarding COVID-19! Come prepared! \nSpring Equinox Morning Observance\nWatch the Sunrise Alignment Enlighten the Heart Stone \nWe will welcome the first sunrise of Spring together as we watch the Equinox sunrise alignment here at Kinstone.  \nSpring Equinox is an astronomically significant solar event. It occurs when the sun is midpoint in its journey from Winter Solstice to Summer Solstice. The sun appears to rise at due east and set at due west. It is traditionally seen as a time of balance. The light of day and the dark of night are equal. It is a harbinger of spring; a time for new beginnings\, growth\, and seeking the joy of the light. \nAt Kinstone we have a unique alignment visible only at Equinox at sunrise. Stand with us in The Three Witnesses sculpture as the sun aligns through the Equinox Window and highlights the Heart Stone. Come and see! \nCOST: admission to Kinstone ($5/person) Place your admission in the Blue Payment Box attached to the Information Sign Board near the parking areas. No Registration Required \nDate: Friday\, March 20   Time: 6:30am \nActual sunrise is expected at 7:08am for our location. However\, with the topography specific to Kinstone\, the time we witness it may be just a bit later! Come at 6:30 to enjoy the predawn colors and our brief program before the sun rises! \n\n\n This will be a quiet\, meditative event with a short opening rite and reading to welcome Spring. \nThis event is outdoors and will be held only in good weather. In light of COVID-19\, for everyone’s health and safety\, we will NOT gather indoors for any portion of this program and no indoor social time or refreshments will be offered. If it is raining or very overcast\, this event will be cancelled. \nCancellation will occur in case of overcast\, rainy or stormy weather. Cancellations will be posted ONLY on THIS event page and on the corresponding Facebook event page at least 1 hour before the scheduled start time for this event. \n\nHAPPY SPRING! \nInteresting fact: The exact time of the astronomical Vernal Equinox is Thursday\, March 19\, 2020\, at 10:49pm CDT.  \nPhoto credit: Kristine Beck
