You do NOT have to participate in the 5k to attend the bonfire ceremony\, HOWEVER\, there is still a $10 cash admission fee required to enter Kinstone.\n4. If you cannot attend\, but you want to write a message to a loved one to be sent up during the bonfire ceremony\, feel free to visit the following link before Noon on Oct 13th: Portage for a Purpose Messages\n\nWe hope to see you there!    Keep reading to get ALL the Details!\n\n\n\n\nJoin us for this unique 5k event that includes walkers and some intrepid folks who will carry canoes the entire distance! Evan Hansen will portage the original canoe during this 5k event and bring it again to rest on the stone known as “Eternity” (where his original journey ended). Will you walk with him? Will you carry a canoe as well? Walking this mostly uphill trek\, whether carrying a canoe or not\, can be seen as a symbol of carrying the burdens of life that often overwhelm us; a way to show support for all of us that carry heavy burdens often invisible to our friends and family. Walk with us! \nKinstone is excited to announce that our own Education Center Building is the place where the original canoe with all the signatures will be displayed for the foreseeable future.  It is poignant and fitting that this canoe will reside right where the original journey ended: KINSTONE! \nWe are thrilled that others will be able to visit the canoe. It will be a visual reminder of those who have been lost due to suicide and a symbol that community is a necessary ingredient for the overall wellbeing – physical\, emotional\, mental\, and spiritual – of all. \nThe goal of this 5k event is to raise  awareness about suicide and suicide prevention as we commemorate the 313 mile portage completed by Evan Hansen that finished in Great Stone Circle at Kinstone in 2021. Read more about the history below. \n5k Event Details: \nDate: Saturday\, October 14th \nStarting Time: 10:00am \nFee :  $10/person \nWalkers/Portagers:  pay the fee and register at the start of the 5k event at the sign-in table at the starting location  (no pre-registration required) \nEveryone else:  the $10 admission can be paid in advance online or in person in the Gift Shop (cash\, credit/debit\, apple pay\, venmo\, paypal)\, or in the Blue Payment boxes (cash only) on the Information Kiosks near the parking areas. \nStarting Location:  Bluff Siding Road near the intersection of WI HWY 35 and County Road M\, near George’s Lounge (address for reference: W428 Bluff Siding Rd\, Fountain City\, WI\, 54629) \nEnding Location:  Kinstone\, in the Great Stone Circle at the stone known as “Eternity”  (address for reference: S3439 Cole Bluff Lane\, Fountain City\, WI\, 54629) \nFire Ceremony:  After all walkers and portagers have completed the trek and after everyone’s offerings have been made and messages written\, there will be a ceremony at the Stargazer Circle. We hope to have a fire and the opportunity to burn our messages. However\, with the ultra dry conditions we have been experiencing there may still be burn bans in place. If no fire is possible\, we will have an alternative method of honoring the offering and messages of all. \nRefreshments: There will be refreshments available in the Kinstone Education Center during the dedication ceremony and installation of the canoe inside. \nImportant Details for Participants and Supporters of Participants: \nBring flowers or other natural offerings if you wish as the Eternity Stone will serve as a symbolic grave for all those lost to suicide. \nThere will be paper and pens available so you can write messages to loved ones.  These messages will be ceremoniously burned in a bonfire in the Stargazer Circle (burn conditions permitting!). If there are drought related burning bans\, we will collect the messages to be held until conditions allow for a fire. \nPlease stay until the end as we will be dedicating the occasion by installing the original canoe and special plaque in the Kinstone Education Center building for posterity. \nEvan Hansen wrote a book called “Into the Wind” about his experiences on his 313 mile portage in 2021. This book is available for sale in the Kinstone Gift Shop. It is a compelling and relevant read. Get your copy here! \n50% of all admissions to Kinstone for the entire day\, whether related to this event or not\, shall be donated to NAMI SE MN. \nSpecial messages for your loved ones can be created in several ways\, please take time to offer a message of love and remembrance whether you are able to be present for this event or not. Here are the ways you can leave messages: \na)  Directly at Kinstone on the day of the event\, write a message as part of our fire ceremony \nb) Online at NAMI at this link: Portage for a Purpose Messages  Messages received before Noon\, Friday\, October 13 will be collected and brought to Kinstone for our fire ceremony \nc) Online at NAMI at this link: Paddles for a Purpose Messages –  where you can request your loved one’s name to be inscribed on a canoe paddle. \nIf you wish to make a donation directly to NAMI in memory of your loved ones\, you can do so  in person at Kinstone during this event or anytime online at this link:  Portage for a Purpose NAMI Donations \nThank you! Your support is greatly appreciated. \n  \nHistorical Perspective on Portage For A Purpose \nIn 2021\, Evan Hansen portaged a canoe over 300 miles across the state of Minnesota to raise awareness about suicide and suicide prevention. He called his journey “Portage for a Purpose”. Along the way\, he collected names and stories of people with loved ones who died due to suicide. Those names were written on the canoe. He ended that portage/walk in the center of Kinstone’s own Great Stone Circle at the stone known at “Eternity”.  Throughout this project he raised over $50\,000 for the National Alliance of Mental Illness (NAMI SE MN). \nIn 2022\, he commemorated the anniversary of that effort with a public 5k portage / walk that traced the last five kilometers of his original journey – a mostly uphill trek. Now\, in conjunction with Kinstone\, Evan will host this Portage for a Purpose 5k Event again!  Last year (2022) we had over 20 walkers and 2 portagers. We expect many more participants this year and definitely more people carrying canoes in this unique 5k event! Will you be one of them? \nTogether\, Kinstone and Evan Hansen offer this event as a force for good; it is one way we can provide a positive impact and support for those who may be struggling with mental illness. \n\n\n\n\n“Anything you do from the soulful self will help lighten the burdens of the world. Anything. You have no idea what the smallest word\, the tiniest generosity\, can cause to be set in motion…Mend the part of the world that is within your reach.” ~Clarissa Pinkola Estes \n\n\n\n\n  \nVisit Evan Hansen’s facebook page\, Portage for a Purpose\, for more information about him and his mission.
