General Class Times
Classes generally run on the following schedule unless specified otherwise in the class description:
- Full day classes: 9:00am – 5:00pm (with lunch break around Noon)
- Morning-only classes: 8:30am – 12:30pm
- Afternoon-only classes: 12:30pm – 4:30pm
Class Location / Directions
All classes take place at the Kinstone Academy of Applied Permaculture campus that is on the Kinstone property in rural Fountain City, Wisconsin unless otherwise specified in the class description.
We are located at S3439 Cole Bluff Lane, Fountain City, Wisconsin 54629. You can put this in your GPS device but there is not always service for GPS devices in the hills and valleys around this area. So, remember to check out the map before you go. Specific directions are available on here: Direction/Getting to Kinstone.
A free lunch is made available for participants enrolled in classes that are scheduled for one full day (i.e. 6 hours or more in one day). Up to three free meals per day are made available for participants enrolled in courses that are scheduled to occur over two or more consecutive days with 8 hours scheduled per day. The first day and the last day of multiple-day courses may have a different meal schedule and may include fewer meals. Further details about meal schedules for multiple-day courses will be included in the confirmation email you will receive upon completing your registration.
We make every effort to use organic and locally sourced food and ingredients in our meals. We offer a general menu that is suitable for omnivores as well as for vegetarians. We offer water to drink for all meals; coffee and hot tea are available at meals and breaks. If you have any food allergies or have any special dietary requirements, please bring your own meals and snacks to supplement what we provide.
In all cases, please feel free to bring your own beverages, meals and/or snacks if you wish to do so. If you do plan to bring your own meals and snacks, please indicate that on your registration form so we can plan accordingly. We recommend that you bring your own drinking vessel (i.e. water bottle and/or insulated travel mug).
There are several restaurants in nearby Fountain City, WI and Winona, MN where you may obtain meals on your own. There is a listing of local restaurants on our website under Accommodations.
If you require lodging while participating in a course, there are several options. There is limited free tent camping available at Kinstone in our designated camping area; for registered students only, on a first come basis. Campers must bring their own tent, sleeping gear and camping equipment. We also sometimes have our yurt available for shared accommodation for up to 8 same-gendered individuals. Please inquire about this to find out more and if it is available during the course(s) you plan to enroll in. There are hotels and B&B’s nearby (within 5-10 miles). If a course or event is cancelled by Kinstone for any reason, all registered participants will receive a full refund of any tuition or fees paid, including any deposit. In all other cases, cancellations are handled as described in this section. All cancellations and refund requests must be made in writing and sent to Kinstone via email to email@example.com or via US mail.
We do not offer refunds for cancellations less than two weeks before any class. If your written cancellation is received fourteen (14) or fewer days in advance of the course or event start date, you will receive no refund.
If your written cancellation is received more than 14 days prior to the start date of a course, you will receive a refund of 100% of the total amount paid minus any non-refundable Deposit or minus a $10 handling fee, whichever is greater.
- Example 1: if you paid $500 for a course/event and that course had a $125 non-refundable deposit associated with it, and you cancel 15 or more days before the course/event start date, you will receive $375.00; that is: $500-$125 deposit = $375.
- Example 2: if you paid $500 for a course/event and that course had a $125 non-refundable deposit associated with it, and you cancel 14 or fewer days before the course/event start date, you will receive no refund ($0.00).
- Example 3: if you paid $250 for a course/event and there was no associated non-refundable deposit for the course, and you cancel 15 or more days before the course/event start date you will receive $240; that is: $250 – $10 processing fee = $240.
- Example 4: if you paid $250 for a course/event and there was no associated non-refundable deposit, and you cancel 14 or fewer days before the course/event start date you will receive no refund ($0.00).
Any refunds due will be paid by direct refund through PayPal or credit card for those that paid via PayPal or credit card; otherwise, by check within two weeks after receiving a written cancellation notice.
Families & Children
Kinstone recognizes the value of families learning and playing together. We have limited offerings of Kids programs. Some courses allow children to be registered with a registered adult. Please see our Age Policy below regarding the ability for children under the age of 18 to participate in other courses.
All classes at Kinstone, unless otherwise specified, are designated for and open to students 18 years of age and up. For clarity, these classes are herein referred to as “adult” classes. In the interest of encouraging intergenerational and family learning, some adult classes are open to children ages 13 through 17 provided that a fully registered adult accompanies each registered child. All classes that offer this option are designated as such in the course description with the words “Children ages 13-17 may register with a registered adult.” If you have any questions about the appropriateness of a class for a particular child, please contact the Kinstone office.
Parking is limited. As you approach Kinstone see signs for parking and follow posted directions.
Do not bring pets. No pets of any kind are allowed.
Alcohol, Tobacco, Drugs
You may use tobacco; however, smoking is not permitted in any building or structure on the Kinstone property. Please be considerate of others and dispose of all tobacco, cigarette butts and matches responsibly.
Alcohol is not permitted at Kinstone except as may be allowed during certain designated Kinstone courses or special events sponsored by Kinstone from time to time.
Illegal drugs are not permitted at Kinstone at any time.

Discounts are available! We offer a 10% discount when you register as a couple or group of two or more (each person in the group receives the discount). We offer a 10% discount for military personnel and veterans with proof of service. We also offer a 10% discount if you have completed a prior course at Kinstone Academy. Only one (1) discount may be applied per registration.
Kinstone and Kinstone Academy of Applied Permaculture offer a variety of courses reflecting interests and topics that complement our core wholistic health and Permaculture focus. Some Information You Should Know Before You Arrive
Plan to give yourself enough time to unload and get settled before your first class begins. You can arrive the day of or the night before the beginning of your course. When you arrive, please register and sign in at the Kinstone Education Center between 4:00pm and 6:00pm the evening before your course starts or between 7:00am and 8:00am on the day your course starts. When you sign in, turn in any paperwork or payments that have not been handled in advance. It is important for you to be present for the start of the first session of your course or event which begins at 8:30am, unless otherwise stated. Be prepared. We begin all classes promptly.
Accommodation for students who have arranged to stay at Kinstone is provided until the morning of the last day of the course. All persons staying at Kinstone must vacate their accommodations by 1:00pm on the last day of the course.
Parking is at a premium at Kinstone. As you approach Kinstone see signs for parking and follow posted directions. The spaces near the classroom building are reserved for staff. All students must park in areas designated for student parking.
Please fill out the health form, the emergency contact form and the liability forms which will be provided in the confirmation email you will receive upon completing your registration; have these printed and ready to turn in when you sign in upon arrival at Kinstone.
Ideally, you are able to attend Kinstone courses with no interference from the outside world. But, of course, we understand that it might be necessary to stay in touch. Please follow these protocols when using the following technology at Kinstone:
To provide an experience where everyone is present and engaged, we ask that you only use cell phones (including calls, texting, social media, surfing & email) outside during breaks or in your designated sleeping quarters or your vehicle. Cell phones are not permitted during class time.
Generally, cell phone service is reasonably reliable for Verizon, Sprint, and AT&T. We are unsure about other carriers.
Wireless Internet Access
Wireless Internet access is readily available at Kinstone for registered students. The network id and password will be provided on the first day of class.
Laptop Computers, electronics
It is recommended that you bring your own laptop computer (includes iPad, tablet, PC, MAC, or other electronic devices for accessing internet, electronic files, email, etc). We ask that you only use your laptop computer when required as part of class. To encourage your presence and attention throughout the course, we ask that outside of classwork you use your computers only in private areas and not in common areas (i.e., dining areas, gathering spots, etc.). Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
There is a designated area for charging your electronic devices. Inquire with the staff if you have any trouble locating it.
Packing Checklist / Recommended Things to Bring Along
- Long pants & shorts
- Sturdy work shoes/boots
- Rubber/muck boots (in case of rain)
Note: Everything gets dirty out here. You’ll want extra clothes. It can get chilly or cold or hot or muggy unexpectedly and suddenly; plan accordingly.
- Work gloves
- Bug spray
- Lawn chair/camping chair (this is not required, but we encourage you to bring your own)
- Shampoo/conditioner (biodegradable if staying at Kinstone!)
- Soap / Deodorant (biodegradable if staying at Kinstone!)
- Comb & brush
- Sanitary supplies
- Toothbrush/toothpaste/dental floss
- Flashlight, headlamp and/or lantern
- Your own coffee mug (this is not required, but we encourage you to bring your own)
- Your own water bottle (This is IMPORTANT. Bottled water will not be available.)
- Prescriptions and over the counter medications or your own remedies for headaches, general first aid, etc.
- Clothes washing liquid (biodegradable, earth friendly; for rinsing out clothing if necessary)
- Snacks, energy bars, trail mix (snacks are provided, but we encourage you to bring more if you think you may want more)
- Notebook for class notes
- Laptop (optional)
- Cell phone (optional)
- Musical instruments, poetry, crafts or other personal items for sharing time and talent around the bonfire or at other informal gatherings throughout the course
Extra Packing List for those Camping at Kinstone
Tent & Camping Supplies
If you are tenting at Kinstone you are responsible for your own tent, sleeping gear, and camping equipment and supplies; however, please do not bring any cooking supplies, there will be no camp cooking. A good flashlight, headlamp, or lantern is highly recommended as our camping area has no electricity and the paths there are rugged and steep in places, and it gets very dark, especially on moonless nights.
